Kaname Tosen is the former captain of the 9th division, which specializes in Seireitei (Soul Society) communication. At the end of the Soul Society Arc, he betrayed Soul Society along with Sosuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru. He is well-known for his strong ideals and belief in justice.
He loves going off on rants about justice and taking the path of least bloodshed. While he was still in Soul Society, he used to run a journal on justice, which sadly wasn’t very popular. However, his recipes on food were insanely popular among Shinigami women.
Keeping that aside, he has amazing swordsmanship skills, as proven by his standoff with the likes of Shinji Hirako. Also, his Shunpo skills are incredible and he has consistently proven himself to be quick. His Kido spells are impressive too when he used a high-level Kido spell against Grimmjow.
In this article, however, we’ll be focussing on his Zanpakutou, Suzumushi, and its Shikai and Bankai states.
Shikai Stage of Suzumushi
The release command of Suzumushi’s Shikai is “Cry, Suzumushi”. This activates a high-pitched sound over a large area, thus making people unconscious. This is largely consistent with his philosophy of taking the path where bloodshed would be minimized. This technique was used against Uryu Ishida, right after he fought a lengthy battle against Mayuri Kurotsuchi.
Kaname Tosen also has another Shikai ability called Suzumushi Nishiki: Benihiko. This makes the blade vibrate, after which he waves it in the shape of a semicircle. This allows him to hurl large amounts of blades against a target.
Bankai Stage of Suzumushi
This Bankai Stage of Kaname Tosen’s Suzumushi allows him to create a huge black dome, as an extension of his Zanpakutou. It is called Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Kōrogi. Inside this black dome, all the senses (except touch) are nullified and rendered completely useless.
This gives Tosen the power to command the battlefield and inflict damage on his opponent. However, one huge disadvantage of this Bankai is that if you touch Suzumushi’s hilt, you can get back your senses. Kenpachi Zaraki discovered this limitation and effortlessly defeated Tosen, after which the dome disappeared.
