More About Demon Slayer’s Upcoming Movie From NYCC 2020

Funimation and Aniplex of America have announced that the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train (Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-Hen) film will be getting a theatrical release in North America in the early half of 2021. It is the upcoming sequel to the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. This announcement was made on Friday during the Demon Slayer special panel for New York Comic Con Metaverse and confirms that the release date will be in the early half of the next year, compared to Funimation’s vague 2021 release window before. However, that is all the concrete new information we get about the movie.

The anime series is now available on most mainstream streaming platforms, and you can watch the trailer for the movie here:

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train will have its premiere in theatres in Japan on October 16th, and is the first movie this year to be released directly into the country’s 38 IMAX theatres. So fans will also be able to go to special IMAX screenings of the movie. Both Funimation and Aniplex of America are hoping that the situation in North America improves to the point that a similar type of release can also happen in North America. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the release of this movie.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was a surprise hit—after the release of the 26-episode anime, sales for the manga (by Koyoharu Gotouge) it was based on blew up. And unlike most anime movies, Mugen Ressha, or Infinity Train, follows up right after the events of the first season. It is an adaptation of an arc from the manga, where Tanjiro and his friends assist the flame hashira Kyojuro Rengoku in a case where people are disappearing mysteriously from a train. There they encounter Enmu, one of the 12 elite guards of antagonist Muzan Kibutsuji, and who has transformed the train into a personal hunting ground.
