Lee Isaac Chang Is Set To Direct Hollywood Remake of “Your Name”
The director of “Minari”, Lee Isaac Chang, is set to direct the Hollywood remake of Makoto Shinkai’s “Your Name”.
The story of the live-action adaptation focuses on two high schoolers who discover that they are magically connected and mysteriously interchange bodies.
When a disaster threatens to change their lives forever, they must set out on an adventure to meet and save their worlds.
Makoto Shinkai’s original 2016 film “Your Name” revolves around Taki Tachibana, a high school boy in Tokyo and a high school girl, Mitsuha Miyamizu, living in the rural town of Itomori, who suddenly and mysteriously begin to swap bodies.
The film was distributed by Toho and premiered at the Anime Expo 2016 convention in Los Angeles, California, on July 3, 2016, and in Japan on August 26, 2016.
It received critical acclaim globally and was also a huge commercial success becoming the second highest-grossing anime film of all time.
Funimation Films screened the movie in North America and currently holds the license for the original film.
In February of 2019, Deadline had initially reported that the producer of 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spiderman, Marc Webb, would be directing the Hollywood remake of “Your Name”.
Director Chung is also in charge of rewriting the script for this new film adaptation. The Hollywood remake’s script is being based on a draft from Emily V. Gordon and not the initial script written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer.
The film “Munyurangabo” in 2007 marked Chung’s debut as a director and was officially selected to play at esteemed festivals in Cannes, Toronto, and Berlin.
His most recent film, “Minari”, was inspired by his childhood and the film received the top two U.S. awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for its captivating concept.
Paramount Pictures and J. J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions are producing the new film with the original film’s producer TOHO who is also in charge of the new film’s distribution in Japan.
Super 8’s producer Abrams and Lindsey Weber from Bad Robot are being officially credited as producers alongside the original film’s producer, Genki Kawamura.
