Hunter x Hunter has a 1999 version and a 2011 version. Both adaptations added a similar plotline for Gon’s dad. However, Mito’s character did face a slight change respective to both the manga and anime adaptations. The versions also display a very different beginning to Gon’s reason to become a hunter in the first place, i.e., Kite’s appearance in the initial episodes in the 1999 version. Hunter x Hunter: To Protect Gon
It’s no secret that Ging is one of the most powerful characters in the anime after Meruem and his army of ants and, Netero. Making him stronger than Chrollo and Hisoka easily. It is also very evident that Ging likes seeming mysterious hence his absence in the Chimera Ant Arc. A famous fan theory states that Ging left Gon to keep him safer from the enemies he made on his journey to become a strong Hunter. Ging has had a constant cold demeanor towards every character in the series, and this attitude easily had made him a lot of enemies. Leaving Gon in the hands of his Aunt Mito may have seemed to be a better option.
Ging loves Gon no matter what. He knew God would follow him and his routes. Hence, the Greed Island Arc and the encounter with Kite. Ging left clues all along. He also constantly mentions Gon’s ability to be a great Hunter. Nonetheless, his hard stares give the impression of a distant father, which he absolutely was. But him leaving clues all along strongly points that he believed that Gon would make it. This could be an answer to why did Ging leave Gon.

Hunter x Hunter: Ging Wanted To Keep Exploring As A Full-Time Hunter
Fans hate admitting this theory, but it’s one of the most famous ones. Ging left Gon since he never wanted Gon. He never wanted to be a father and honestly knew he’d be a terrible one. As claimed by Mito, Ging never left, which may have been a lie considering her relationship with Gon; viewers are sure Gon read through her lie. Coincidentally, the manga also mentions Mito suing Ging for Gon’s custody, but nothing appears to have forced an abandonment. Mito can’t possibly force Ging under any circumstance.
Lastly, Ging mentions in the tape recorder that being a Hunter was more important to him than his own child. Ging wanted to explore what’s unseen, clearly the Dark Continent. What is also to notice is the Dark Continent was written by someone called “Freecs”. In the next adaption of the manga and anime, the main plotline is obvious to the loyal viewers.
