Do Retry: A Comprehensive Review of the Newest Shonen Jump Manga!
On May 7th, 2023, Jun Kirarazaka’s newest Shonen manga, titled Do Retry, was published. This is a historical sports manga. A young war orphan who refuses to give up the fight is the protagonist of this tale. This is the tale of his journey to follow in his father’s footsteps as a professional boxer.
Now that it’s finally out, I want to give you the first peek at the manga! Okay, let’s just jump in!
Do Retry seems to take the expected shounen path, and at first glance it seems very cliche. However, the manga’s plot being set in an alternate timeline could be a selling point. There is nothing distinctive about the artwork.
Do Retry: The Plot
In Do Retry, we follow the life of Aozora Okami, a 14-year-old whose father has a profound influence on his decision to pursue boxing as a career. The story takes place in 1945, at the height of the war. His parents die tragic deaths, and he and his ailing sister are abandoned in a wild, impoverished country.
Luckily, he meets a woman who is interested in his boxing skills and provides financial support for his sister’s medical care. This is the beginning of his exciting journey into boxing, the purest and most fundamental of sports.
The plot isn’t really original; it follows the standard formula for a shounen. We understood the fundamentals of every shounen in the manga: He is an unyielding protagonist, an orphan, and he has a burning interest in something.
So, judging solely by the plot, it’s not great and borders on cliche. But hey, that’s the beauty of Shonen: you can take tired plot devices and give them a new twist. The key is precision.
Does ‘accomplish Retry’ have the capability to accomplish that? It’s premature to answer that question; we need at least a few more chapters of the story.
Visual aesthetic and design of characters!
The visuals are solid without being mind-blowing. The art style is dynamic, and the characters are realistically rendered. Although the 1940s setting is a wonderful touch, the design of the characters is nothing special.
The panels in the manga break off at odd intervals, and the story as a whole lacks cohesion. The boxing scenes are crucial, and we must now await their completion.
Complete Analysis: Do Retry
Do Retry is essentially a standard shounen manga, following the adventures of a protagonist who, despite facing insurmountable obstacles, refuses to give up and so stands out from the crowd.
The visuals are mediocre at best and add nothing to the experience. Don’t get me wrong, though; despite the fact that the story and art of most Shounen manga are cliche, I still find myself enjoying them immensely.
Given that the manga takes place at a time of war and centers on boxing, there is a great deal of room for original story development. But it remains to be seen how the author develops the plot.
