The Finale of Golden Kamuy Season 4 Episode 8: “Brown Bear Man”

An explosion involving a floating bear at the beginning of the episode was just the beginning of the episode’s insanely bizarre antics. The anime completely fooled us with Heita’s predicament by suggesting that all is not as it seems.

Episode 8 of Season 4 of Golden Kamuy had everything that makes that show so great. Right when I thought I had things figured out, a murderous nutjob was thrown into the mix. The episode ended on a somber note, after all the chaos had subsided.

Yoshitake was very sad that he didn’t get that gold, of course. We also learned a little more about Ainu culture and history, which is always interesting.

Sugimoto, Yoshitake, and Asirpa are back in Hokkaido and ready to get serious about looking for gold. They hear that someone found gold in the Uryu River, so they go to check it out.

We meet the episode’s main character, Heita. And this is where things start to get weird. Heita tells them about platinum while they are freezing to death looking for gold in that cold river.

He starts talking about a creature called a wenkamuy that has been living in the river for a long time. Then we see him up in a tree, snooping on Noriko and Taka while they are having a private moment, and he is wagging his tongue in the air. Gross!

We find out that Heita made Noriko, Taka, and the bear up in her messed-up mind. This guy was having some very real hallucinations.

Heita kills himself while fighting Sugimoto because he thinks he’s trapped and has killed the wenkamuy. This is a sad end to his story. We also learn a bit about his past and how he got the bear skin.
