All the Changes Made by Netflix’s One Piece in Episode 1
Netflix’s One Piece Live adaptation has already set an astounding record by surpassing Wednesday and Stranger Things in ranking as the streamer’s No. 1 TV series in 84 countries.
Some deviations have been made from the Manga, especially Garp conducting the execution of Gold D. Roger and how Nami and Zoro are introduced. However, the LA series has maintained its loyalty to the Original.
It is a series worth watching. It’s filled with iconic scenes, and the involvement of Eiichiro Oda, coupled with the exuberant energy of the cast, brings the world of One Piece to life.
1. All the changes made in Netflix’s One Piece Episode 1 from the Manga
There have been some alterations regarding the pacing and introduction of characters, as about 100 manga chapters were compressed into these 8 Episodes.
Nevertheless, the series is an absolute must-watch and has stayed true to the manga.
Here are some notable changes made in Netflix’s One Piece Episode 1, titled “Romance Dawn” from the Manga.
1. Garp conducting Gold D. Roger’s execution
The One Piece LA series starts off with Gold D. Roger’s execution, which hooks you in as it’s the inciting incident for the Great Pirate Era.
The execution is conducted by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp.
- In the Manga, however, Garp doesn’t conduct Roger’s execution. Garp makes an appearance in chapter 92 of the Manga.
2. Some important attendees are missing in the execution
Some notable characters were introduced right off the bat attending the execution, like Shanks, Mihawk, Monkey D. Dragon, Smoker, and Bogard.
These characters were present at Roger’s execution, but they weren’t revealed in the beginning. They were shown later on in the flashbacks to the execution.
- They missed out on some important attendees like Buggy, Gecko Moria, Donquixte Doflamigo, and Crocodile.
3. Luffy’s Introduction
In Netflix’s One Piece LA Episode 1, Luffy is introduced as he was in the manga. However, he gets in a Barrel to save himself once his little boat begins to sink, and he ends up inside Alvida’s ship.
- In the Manga, Luffy actually faces a local sea monster and gets sucked into a whirlpool. He does end up inside Alvida’s ship. They got that right.
4. Zoro’s Introduction
Zoro’s introduction is quite different from the manga. We are introduced to Zoro in the Sixis Island before Kuina’s grave.
He encounters and kills Mr. 7 from the Baroque Works, who tried to recruit him.
- In the Manga, Zoro is introduced in Shells Town, and the fight between Zoro and Mr.7 does take place in the manga, but it isn’t shown in the beginning. It’s referenced later on in the story.
5. Brawl between Luffy & Koby Doesn’t Happen
Koby signing up as a Marine at Shell’s town is in accordance with the manga. They don’t depict the brawl between the two. Instead, Koby stays at the marine base and is interrogated by Garp later on in the next episode.
- In the Manga, Luffy and Koby have a brawl or “fight,” as you may call it.
6. Nami’s Introduction
Nami is introduced in the first episode and infiltrates the Marine base at Shell’s town, where she meets Luffy and Zoro.
They work together to get themselves out of there with the map of the Gran Line.
- In the Manga, Nami is introduced after the conclusion of Shell’s Town arc in chapter 8.
7. Map To The Grand Line being stolen from the Marines
In Episode 1 of the One Piece LA series, The Map To the Grand Line is stolen by Luffy and Nami, which was hidden in a safe inside Captain Morgan’s office.
It was the location of the Marine 153rd Branch, headed by Captain Morgan.
- In the Manga, the Map To The Grand Line belonged to Buggy, and Nami stole it from him and later framed Luffy to gain Buggy’s trust.
