The 9th episode of The Apothecary Diaries showed us that in this rear palace, Maomao is always going to be busy as she had to handle two cases this time. Jinshi was still not over the fact that Maomao went to her homecoming with another man. Then he received the news that a higher-up died because of excess alcohol. He called Maomao but after some questioning, they reached no point.
She then asked for the pot he was served drinks and deduced that he was killed because of excess salt in his drinks. She was not sure who could have done it but she gave hints to Jinshi so he could persuade the killer. It was revealed that the person lost his sense of taste because of a tragedy. The next thing we saw a woman was found drowned outside the rear palace.
Maomao along with the official doctor was called for examination. She then explained what could have happened to Jinshi but they never reached a proper conclusion and the case was closed after some time. Maomao was concerned about something and asked Jinshi outright that if she ever gets executed for her sins she wants to go out by drinking poison. Jinshi was shocked by what she said but it was certain that she was talking seriously.
