Baker Charged for Selling Unauthorized Demon Slayer Cakes
Copyright’s no joke, and a woman who runs a cake business recently learned how serious a copyright violation might be.
The Mukaishima Metropolitan Police Department charged a Tokyo-based baker with violating copyright laws by selling unlicensed Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise cakes.
Since its anime adaptation in April 2019, Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has gained immense popularity.
We’d love a slice of Tanjiro, and it appears that it’s a popular choice since the defendant generated around 6.5 million yen selling sweet Demon Slayer cakes since July 2019.
On Instagram, she sold each cake for 13,000 to 15,000 yen, translating from about US$113.97 to US$131.50.
It’s safe to say there are some Demon Slayer fans out there who just want some Zenitsu for dessert.
After a production firm saw her cakes on Instagram, they contacted the authorities, and the defendant is now facing charges.
Knowing that the violation was a criminal offense, the baker admitted to the charge and said that she believed the desserts would sell nicely because of the popularity of the anime characters at the time.
