Disney Announces Dragons of Wonderhatch, an Anime/Live-Action Hybrid
Nowadays, new anime innovations appear almost daily, but Disney’s efforts stand out because they are so far outside the norm. They’ve announced that they’re making a live-action/anime crossover called “Dragons of Wonderhatch.”
The show’s setting will alternate between the real world and the fantastical realm of dragons, as you might have guessed. The show will combine live-action depictions of the real world with animated ones of the fantastic.
Disney also released a promotional video for “Dragons of Wonderhatch,” which gives an inside look at the making of the show. There will be more information released soon, but it is planned for the winter of 2023.
The franchise has not yet revealed a plot summary, so details are scarce. However, there is some background information available.
The main characters are a high school student named Nagi from our world and a young man named Tyme who lives in the dragon world. In the preview, we see that for some reason, Nagi is terrified and confused to find Tyme in her room.
It turns out that Tyme is a dragonrider, a type of person who can understand the dragons’ cries and converse with them. The video makes it clear that Nagi will have to juggle her two worlds because Tyme will drag her and her real life into the fantasy world.
Nagi’s friend Son and another dragonrider named Akuta have also been introduced. After telling us so much about the characters, it wouldn’t be right for the franchise to keep us in the dark about who plays them, so they gave us a list of the principal actors:
Character | Cast (Live-Action) | Other Works (Live-Action) |
Nagi | Sena Nakajima | Ikuko (We Are Little Zombies) |
Tyme | Daiken Okudaira | Zakiyama Sota (My Small Land ) |
Son | Yoshito Emmanuelle | — |
Akuta | Mackenyu Arata | Enishi Yukishiro (Rurouni Kenshin Saishūshō The Final) |
After helming the successful live-action adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul, director Kentarō Hagiwara is back for more. Meanwhile, Posuka Demizu is creating the original character designs, and Takashi Otsuka is leading the anime portion of the show.
The film adaptation of One Piece Stampede was directed by Takashi Otsuka, and Posuka is the man behind the original manga for The Promised Neverland. It’s likely that the show’s cast will also provide the voices for the anime adaptations of their roles.
The incredible quality of the supporting cast and crew has raised the bar even higher for the show.
More than that, the production diaries have piqued my interest in the story and its outcome.
Dragons of Wonderhatch
Disney’s upcoming anime/live-action hybrid work, Dragons of Wonderhatch ( Wonderhatch -Sora-Tobu Ry no Shima-), is based on the Japanese manga series, Wonderhatch. The live-action world will be contrasted with an animated imaginary world of dragons and dragon riders.
The story will center on two main characters: a high school student named Nagi from the real world and a boy called Tyme from the fantastical one.
