As the eccentric dancer-musician duo Inu-Oh and Tomona make their way through people’s hearts, it’s still a long way till they’re accepted as a part of society.

Masaaki Yuasa is renowned as an anime director and has given us gems like DEVILMAN crybaby and Crayon Shin-chan. Since these two shows work on completely opposite themes, fans have been curious about how Inu-Oh will turn out.

The folklore-themed anime film Inu-Oh by Masaaki Yuasa has released two new teasers of 30 and 60-seconds each for the show’s early summer 2022 debut.

The 30-second video is upbeat and involves the public loudly chanting and cheering for Inu-Oh and Tomona.

In the background, a conversation plays where blind musician Tomona introduces himself to Inu-Oh, who’s shunned by society due to his physical appearance.

It also shows glimpses of their performances and struggles throughout the film as they continue to entertain the crowds and make a name for themselves.

The 60-second trailer has a more dismal tone as a sad folk song plays in the background.

We see some bloodshed, more trauma faced by Tomona and Inu-Oh, along with some peculiar and somewhat eerie symbolism and art. But then the video picks up the pace and continues the same as the 30-second one.

The significant difference between the two is that the longer version shows us more reality and artistic expressions of the characters while the shorter version shows us the praise they get for their work.

Inu-Oh is that one-of-a-kind anime film that makes you perceive the world differently. Because if it weren’t for art by the ‘weirdos’ of society, the world would’ve been genuinely depressing.

The movie looks promising, and I can’t wait to see what new and unique Yuasa brings us this time.

About Inu-Oh

INU-OH is a musical anime feature film of Hideo Furukawa’s Heike Monogatari: INU-OH no Maki (Tales of the Heike: INU-OH) novel. The film will make its world premiere and compete in the Horizons (Orizzonti) category at the 78th Venice International Film Festival.

Inu-Oh is born with unique physical characteristics, and the horrified adults cover every inch of his body with garments, including a mask on his face. One day, he meets a boy named Tomona, a blind biwa player, and as Tomona plays a delicate song of tangled fate, Inu-Oh discovers an incredible ability to dance.

Inu-Oh and Tomona become business partners and through the songs, Inu-Oh mesmerizes his audiences on stage, and gradually begins to transform into someone of unequaled beauty. But why is Tomona blind? Why was Inu-Oh born with unique characteristics?
