George R.R. Martin Reveals His Favorite Series Finale! (Hint: It’s Not GOT)
Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin has revealed his favorite series finale of all time, and as expected, it isn’t Game of Thrones. The author chose to go with the puzzling, disturbing, and genuinely one-of-a-kind show Six Feet Under.
The fate of Westeros was decided in 2019 when Game of Thrones season 8 ended with a shocking (read: blasphemous) twist. Bran Stark had suddenly become the king, and Daenerys Targaryen was killed by Jon Snow, for which he was banished.
The abysmal ending raised many eyebrows, and fans protested heavily to the extent of demanding a complete do-over like Justice League.
Martin shared his thoughts on a recent list of 25 “perfect” TV episodes by Vanity Fair in his blog. He said that his own episode, “Blackwater” from GOT season 2, was his favorite of the ones he wrote for the show, and showered praise for the 2005 finale of Six Feet Under as the “best finale in the entire history of television.” Here’s what he wrote on his blog:
If I had to pick one episode that was even more perfect than all the others on the list, though, it would have to be the final episode of Six Feet Under. I liked that series well enough, though I cannot say I loved it as much as I loved Rome or Deadwood or Fargo or a few other shows missing from the list, but that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.
The final episode of Game of Thrones left many fans and critics dissatisfied. Some blamed the shortened season of only six episodes, while others pointed out the lack of guidance from Martin’s original books.
The biggest surprise, however, was the choice of the new ruler of Westeros. Who would have guessed Bran Stark would end up on the Iron Throne? I mean, all he did was talk to crows and become a part-time Westerosi history teacher, didn’t he?
Many fans expected Jon Snow to be the one who would sit on the throne since Daenerys and Tyrion Lannister were no longer in the running. Jon Snow would’ve been the perfect candidate for the Iron Throne, but creators Benioff and Weiss went with Brian Stark, one of the biggest catastrophes ever.
However, there is still a chance of Jon Snow getting the ending he deserves in his new spin-off show. Hopefully, the makers will do justice to his character this time.
While the spin-off is yet to be greenlit by HBO, Martin confirmed that early developments are in process based on a pitch made by Kit Harrington himself.
Early predictions say that the show will feature Jon Snow’s life beyond the wall and will hopefully give the epic character the ending he deserves!
