Unlike other Studio Wit productions known for action and gore, the visual of Ousama Ranking has a fairly gentler tone. We see Bojji and his unlikely friend Kage at the center of the poster waving at us, with the show’s title at the top.

KingGnu “BOY”

English Translation, Twitter Translate

The trailer gives us a glimpse into the Ghibli-esque medieval world with the animation style that will awe you if it’s high-paced action or sweet little interactions. We also get a first look at a great many characters, from Bojji’s scheming stepmother Hilling to his kind teacher Dormas.

The anime opening “BOY” by Japanese band King Gnu also features in the trailer.

From the excellent visual and trailer, Ousama Ranking is undoubtedly turning out to be the anime to look out for this year.

The story will be a coming-of-age tale of Bojji as he interacts with others and learns what it takes to be a great king through his close friend and family. But being weak in a world where the powerful snatch success through force doesn’t favor Bojji at all.

Hopefully, he can make it through with just a little help. The additional cast of Ousama Ranking will include:

If anime has taught me anything, it is that the power of friendship overcomes any hurdle (duh), even if it is world-ending aliens or your renegade-edgy ninja rival. So hopefully, Bojji too can make a mark in this world.

About Ousama Ranking

Ōsama Ranking is a Japanese comedy manga series by Sōsuke Tōka. It has been serialized online via Echoes’ user-submitted Manga Hack website since May 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Wit Studio will premiere in October 2021.

The story centers around Bojji, a deaf, powerless prince who cannot even wield a children’s sword. As the firstborn son, he strives hard and dreams of becoming the world’s greatest king.

However, people mutter about him behind his back as “a good-for-nothing prince” and “no way he can be king.” Bojji is able to make his first-ever friend, Kage, a literal shadow on the ground who somehow understands Bojji well.

The story follows Bojji’s coming-of-age as he meets various people in his life, starting with his fateful encounter with Kage.
