In Japan, Super Mario Bros. Has Become A Box Office Phenomenon
The spirit of the classic computer game is beautifully captured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s little wonder that this film has become such a hit given its eye-popping visuals, nonstop action, endearing characters, and dead-on humor.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just someone looking for a thrilling experience, this film will not disappoint. Why wouldn’t it be a smash hit? The worldwide hit finally made it to Japanese theaters, and boy, did it make a splash.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the highest grossing film in Japan its opening weekend. The film earned 1.843 billion yen (about US$13.54 million) from ticket sales alone in its first three days of release. The film has reportedly earned an estimated $1,022,446,698 worldwide, making it the first film this year and the sixth film overall to cross that threshold since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to Deadline, it has earned $1 billion, making it the tenth-highest-grossing animated film of all time. Since 2019, it has also become the fourth most successful film internationally and the most successful animated picture worldwide.
The 26th film in the Detective Conan franchise, Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine (Iron Submarine), was the box office king in Japan for its first two weekends, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie knocked it off the top spot in its third.
Chi no Halloween (Unmei) (Bloody Halloween (Fate), the first of two live-action sequels based on Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga, fell from #2 to #4 in its second weekend.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has obviously been a huge success in Japan, as evidenced by its massive box office takeover there. Its huge profits around the world and in the United States are evidence of its fame and success. I’ve been a fan of the Super Mario Bros. games since I was a kid, and I can’t wait to see the property grow in exciting new ways, like this animated feature.
