KyoAni to Hold Memorial Service Online on the Anniversary of Arson Attack

18th July marks the second anniversary of the Kyoto Animation arson, one of the deadliest massacres in Japan.

The devastating fire in the Kyoto Animation One studio killed 36 people and wounded 33 others. Since then, the studio has organized various memorial events to commemorate the people that passed away. 

On the Kyoto Animation Arson anniversary, the studio released a 13-minute long video to remember the tragedy. The studio posted the video in place of an in-person event due to the ongoing pandemic.

The video starts with observing one minute of silence and then features messages on how the people who passed away will always hold a place in the studio’s history. The studio talked about how they hold onto the memories while always trying to keep moving forward.

The rest of the video includes anonymous messages from the family of victims, colleagues, and people who worked with the studio. Finally, the video ended with a note from Kyoto Animation stating that they will continue to produce work that will express feelings of hope and passion.

Kyoto Animation has also issued a notice prohibiting people from visiting the premises of Kyoto Animation One Studio because the site is in a residential sector, and the influx of people might disturb the residents.

The visitors are refrained from doing activities such as:

  1. Leaving flowers, flammable items, trash, etc.
  2. Parking Vehicles
  3. Staying at the site for a prolonged period 
  4. Shooting videos and photos
  5. Additionally, any other activity that might disturb the residents

As of now, the Japanese prosecutors have formally inducted the prime suspect for starting the fire with gasoline. Following the incident, the studio has received massive support and help from people around the world.
