Netflix Reveals the First Look for The Twits, Based on Roald Dahl’s Classic
Netflix has revealed the first look of its upcoming animated film, The Twits, based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel of the same name.
The film is part of a series of adaptations of Dahl’s works that Netflix is producing. Another project, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, is a live-action short film directed by Wes Anderson, which will premiere on the platform on September 20. The film has received positive feedback from critics. Meanwhile, Netflix is planning to bring more of Dahl’s stories to life on its platform.
Netflix has unveiled the first look of its upcoming film The Twits, an animated adaptation of Dahl’s novel. The image features the titular eccentric couple, Mr. and Mrs. Twit, who run a dubious amusement park called Twitlandia. Mrs. Twit is seen holding a cane with a bird’s head and offering a suspicious-looking pie, which is a reference to an iconic scene from the book. Check out the first look here:
The original novel follows the story of Mr. and Mrs. Twit, an eccentric couple who try to take over the small town they live in with their strange, authoritarian values. Their tyranny is challenged by two orphans and a family of magical animals who join forces to save their community.
Like in all other children’s novels by Dahl, The Twits portrays “grown-ups” or adults as evil people. Dahl’s novels are best known for exploring the gaze of a child or people who are still young at heart. His novels often feature strange characters who seem even more bizarre through the simple gaze of children protagonists. The Twits is one such novel, which is a critique of leaving behind the values of childhood and embracing the world of reality.
The animated film is produced by Jellyfish Pictures and is slated to release on Netflix in 2025. The director is Phil Johnston, with Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong as co-directors. The voice cast has not been revealed yet.
The Twits is part of a series of adaptations of Dahl’s works that Netflix is producing, following a deal that the streaming service made with the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021. Netflix acquired the company in September 2021, giving it exclusive rights to all the classic Dahl stories for film and TV production, as well as publishing. Netflix now has full control over the rights and royalties of all Dahl stories across different media.
The deal with the Roald Dahl Story Company has enabled Netflix to produce multiple adaptations of Dahl’s works. In addition to The Twits and the upcoming The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Netflix also released Matilda: The Musical last year and is working on a series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Anderson may also create more Dahl shorts after The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The Twits is the first animated feature film adaptation of a Dahl property since Netflix acquired the rights. The first look suggests that it could be a successful film when it launches.
