One Piece is an incredibly popular manga with the best sales in the whole world. It is a part of the Holy Shonen Trinity and it has been running for more than 20 years. It is written and drawn by Eiichiro Oda and is serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump of Shueisha.
It follows a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy on his quest to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the Pirate King. He gathers his pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates and they sail from island to island on the tumultuous Grand Line, fighting other pirates, liberating nations and avoiding the Marine Corps.
Currently, we are in the Third Act of the Wano Saga. The flashback arc, revolving around the legendary Kozuki Oden, is finally at its climax. We saw Oden getting defeated and captured by Emperor Kaido and Shogun Orochi.

One Piece Chapter 971 Recap:
Chapter 971: Condemned to Boil
In Oden’s castle, we see a young Momonosuke lamenting his father’s impending execution while Hiyori doesn’t understand what is going on. Oden’s wife, Lady Toki puts on a brave face in front of the children.
Elsewhere, we see a huge pot of boiling oil, meant to burn Oden and his 9 retainers to death.
As everyone criticizes Oden for losing to Kaido, a brave Oden stands tall, still wanting to live. When a guard falls in and dies instantly, Oden proposes a deal with Kaido: Whoever enters the pot and can survive for an hour, will be set free! Oden enters the pot alone and as his whole body burns, he lifts his 9 retainers on a plank of wood. Oden uses all his strength to protect his retainers who tearfully accept his order. Kaido is amused because even though everyone is in the pot, it is only Oden who is burning.
The viewers watch in shock and amazement. Even before 5 minutes have passed, the retainers are suffering from the incredibly hot fumes; they try their best to stay still and make it easier for their lord.
When the spectators insult Oden, Shinobu gets enraged and reveals the truth. She declares how foolish and ignorant the people of Wano are. Wano is peaceful only because of Oden. Shogun Orochi is a vile man who only wants the destruction of that country.
Orochi only wanted revenge against Wano for mistreating the Kurozumi family. Orochi’s father broke the law and was forced to commit suicide and after that, the remaining members were tortured and killed by vigilantes in Wano.
A young and innocent Orochi was tormented only because he bore the Kurozumi name. He had to suffer for his father’s faults. Thus, Orochi rose to the position of Shogun, and to punish Wano, allied with Kaido. Orochi supplied countless weapons and Wano inhabitants to Kaido, just for fun, or to kill them.
Oden found out and went to fight but Orochi appealed to his softness for Wano. Orochi would stop the kidnappings and in return, Oden would have to dance naked as an apology to Orochi and his family. In 5 years, Orochi would build a ship and leave Wano forever. And thus began Oden’s naked dances.
With this, Shinobu bares the truth before everyone; how a single man took all the suffering upon himself just to protect his country!
The upcoming One Piece 972 will reveal more about Oden’s execution. We might also get to see who is the traitor in the next chapter.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold”. Shogun Orochi proved it. We know from the present timeline that Orochi is not going to keep his promise. He will kill Oden and lay complete ruin on Wano and its people for 20 long years. The people will realize how invaluable Oden was and long for the return of its dwellers.
We saw Oden has to survive for 1 hour. Is it the ‘hour of legends’ that has been spoken of or is there a different special hour? So far, only 4 minutes have passed. How is Oden going to survive? Will Kaido just sit quietly or will he act again? How are the remaining minutes going to pass? We believe, in One Piece Chapter 972, that even if Kaido sits still, Orochi won’t. He will try to pull cheap tricks to kill Oden faster.
We now know that Shinobu is not the traitor. So who is the traitor in the midst of Oden’s followers? Is it one of the retainers or is it someone else? We know the old lady Higurashi has Bon Clay’s devil fruit and that she has touched Momonosuke.
Was she the one how leaked information by sneaking into Oden’s castle? Or is it still Shinobu, the person who we suspect the least at this moment?
Will the 9 scabbards escape hassle-free or will they face more challenges? How will they get to Toki if their last order is to ‘Open the Borders of Wano’? We know Toki is going to send some of them to the future but only in One Piece manga 972, will we find out how.
We know Orochi and Kaido will attack and execute people on Oden’s castle. So how are Hiyori and Yasuie going to escape? And if they could, why wasn’t Hiyori sent to the future? Why couldn’t Toki escape?
Even as this arc comes to an end, there are still several questions and multiple events still at hand. In One Piece 972, we will find out how all of this ends!
