Maomao was able to solve the case quite easily but the new case that Lakan came up with might give her a tough time in The Apothecary Diaries Episode 16. Lakan seems interested in her as he wants to test her skills.
In the last episode, we saw that Maomao was given a task by Gaoshun to figure out about a possible poisoning. A merchant who ate various dishes fell into a coma after eating some dish made out of pufferfish but the cook declined the fact saying he used a different fish for the dish. Maomao then visited the place where the incident happened and was able to figure something out.
She then tried to test it out on herself but Jinshi and others made him vomit. She then told them the poisoning was not because of the fish but of the seaweed that was used to make the dish. The seaweed was brought but the man’s younger brother from some other place and that caused the incident.
The younger brother’s motive behind this was to take the place of his brother as he thought he was not treated better. After that, Lakan who works as an army strategist and a weird man as defined by Jinshi comes to talk to Jinshi and eventually reveals a task for Maomao as Lakan wanted Maomao to take a look into the matter after he heard about her from some soldiers.

The Apothecary Diaries Episode 15 Recap
In the previous episode. we saw that Maomao going detective once again but this time the task was assigned by Gaoshun and Jinshi was not a part of this but it looked like for sure that he was very interested in knowing about what was going on. The case was that a man fell into a coma after eating a dish made out of pufferfish.
The thing was the cook refused the claims and said that he used a different kind of fish to make the dish that made the man ill. Maomao then read the notes of the cook and deduced that there must be something wrong with the ingredients and then went to take a look at the kitchen by herself.
The younger brother of the man was furious upon looking at her but she was able to retrieve what she was looking for. It was revealed that the seaweed that was one of the favorite things of the man caused all this but the seaweed was from a different place than the regular place. The younger brother was convicted of the crime as he wanted to take the place of his brother.
After that, we saw that Lakan, an army stratagist came to Jinshi and told a story about his past but then stopped in between and asked Maomao to take a look at a man’s will who died recently. Lakan was struggling with the puzzle he left behind and wanted Maomao’s help with it. So, now Maomao already has a task at hand.
