Unfortunately for us, there is a break next week. Due to research, the author is taking the month off. Now, this does make us curious. What exactly is he researching? Are we getting some exciting data soon?

Why is Thorfinn against gift giving?
The Nordic people gifted the natives with some impressive and useful goods. Now, the Lnus have responded in kind and presented unique goods to the Nords. Their maple syrup has been received with great joy.
This means they have established a friendly relation. Thorfinn proposes that it is time to stop gifting and start trading.
The original purpose was to establish trade routes. He says that they want more of the maple syrup; so in exchange, they must give something which the natives want. And that is how trade will be established. It was a sound idea.

Why is the priest unhappy?
Change is not always welcome. Trade between the Nords and the Lnus was going great – Summer passed and Autumn dawned. In this period, Thorfinn and his people expanded a lot. They made huge grounds to farm wheat. This meant cutting trees.
The priest had previously said that drastic deforestation is not good. Their tribe has lived on the trees and they should not be cutting those down. Obviously, the Lnus chose to ignore that back then and proceed with the trade offers.
The Lnus have benefitted too. They exchanged knowledge and were particularly interested in the usage of iron. But now, since so many trees have been cut, Nisqauji’J’ has had a nightmare.
She fears that the land would become barren soon and the heat would consume all.
The priest takes this as an ominous sign and advises her to get close to nords and find more about them. Apparently, this girl gets premonitions and visions and the priest is unwilling to let this ominous sign slide.
It is a genuine concern though. So in Vinland Saga Chapter 186, we will see the priest holding some sort of ritual.
