6 Anime Films Revealed to be Eligible for the 94th Annual Academy Awards
We all know just how grand it is for a film to receive an Oscar. While this honor has traditionally been given to American movies, Asian films have started competing for such awards in recent years.
Ever since Parasite swooped all the Academy Awards in 2020, film enthusiasts have started exploring Asian media a lot more than before. This significantly boosted all kinds of Eastern entertainment, especially anime.
Now, we’re finally at a point where manga and anime are so widespread that they’ve grabbed the attention of people at the Oscars’.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the list of films eligible for the 94th Oscars’ Animated Feature Film category, with six anime films in consideration. These anime films are as follows:
- BELLE
- Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko
- Josee, The Tiger and the Fish
- The Laws of the Universe – The Age of Elohim
- Pompo: The Cinéphile
- Poupelle of Chimney Town
All of these did numbers on the box office and became blockbusters in no time. They all stood out due to their unique animation style, well fabricated and heart-wrenching plots, and characters you can’t help but love.
BELLE became an inspiring film about being true to yourself and fighting your inner demons, while Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko gave us a heartwarming mother-daughter story.
The Laws of the Universe, though produced by the controversial Happy Science Organization, had an intriguing story that got us hooked on it.
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, Pompo: The Cinéphile, and Poupelle of Chimney Town made us laugh and our hearts giddy.
But then these three hit us with the most touching and emotional scenes that I still cannot comprehend. Yes, it made us cry rivers, and yes, I still don’t know how 2D characters can do that.
The Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022, and the nominations will be revealed on February 8, 2022.

It makes me extremely happy that Asian media is finally getting the recognition it deserves, not just from nerds but from all kinds of people.
I really hope that one of these films at least makes it to the final nominations now.
