MAPPA CEO Compares Chainsaw Man to Jujutsu Kaisen Impact
Chainsaw Man, Season 1 is an excellent adaptation of one of the most popular Mangas of the last few years, which not only stays true to the source material but enhances it with cinematic visuals that give an authentic feel to the absurd, bloody, dumb, and hilarious world presented.
If you want to see something new that won’t take too much time out of your day, you should definitely check it out. Featuring top-notch animation, musical composition, and voice acting, this series has a strong case to be considered among 2022’s best anime.
Anime may have appeared successful at first glance, but was this actually the case? What is it?
The fact that the animation studio MAPPA put up all of the money to make ‘Chainsaw Man’ was a major selling point. On Wednesday, Tokyo Keizai interviewed CEO Manabu Ohtsuka, who was candid about the issue. “As far as investment goes, one could say it was a complete success”, he said.
In contrast to the project we worked on before “Chainsaw Man”, Jujutsu Kaisen, it did not have the same impact. I’m disappointed by this.
The ‘Chainsaw Man’ manga was more well-liked than the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, despite both being made by the same studio.
DVD and Blu-ray sales were another area that fell short of projections. Ohtsuka hoped that it would be seen by more people who are willing to pay for home video releases.
MAPPA isn’t very good in administration, licensing, or product development. Therefore, the company’s time spent on Chainsaw Man was highly educational.
Ohtsuka concluded by saying that Mappa is still a medium-sized firm and that he does not want to invest all future revenues in all anime films. However, he hopes that by setting an example, people will understand that studios can make significant profits from anime production.
Chainsaw Man
The first volume of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga Chainsaw Man was released in December 2018 and will be followed by a second volume in July 2022. MAPPA also adapted the series into an anime series.
The protagonist, Denji, is a young orphan who must pursue a career as a devil hunter to support himself and clear his late father’s debts.
His pet devil, Pochita, was unfortunately slain while on an assignment. When Denji finally comes to, he and Pochita have fused into a single creature called Chainsaw Man. Joining the government and continuing to hunt demons is his only option if he does not want to die.
