Happy Sugar Life
Despite the misleading title, almost little in Happy Sugar Life is actually joyful. The protagonist, Satou Matsuzaka, is arguably the most menacing new Yandere girl since Yuno Gasai. Satou secretly takes Shio, a young girl she has fallen for, back to her flat.
Like any self-respecting yandere, she will resort to violence to protect her cherished. Satou’s sins are revealed by the show’s end, and she pays with her life for them.
Samurai X: Reflection
Because of the tragic ending for two of the most beloved characters, many Rurouni Kenshin fans are not fond of the OVA special Samurai X: Reflection. Kenshin and Kaoru are shown in the film years later, after they have settled down and raised a family.
While she waits for Kenshin to return, Kaoru reflects about their history together. The controversial finale of the OVA has Kenshin and Kaoru reuniting for the last time before they both die of an unknown illness.
Death Note
No one should be shocked by Death Note’s lack of a happy conclusion. After all, the show’s narrative doesn’t exactly leave viewers feeling warm and fuzzy. The final reveal of Light’s demise is inevitable, but it still comes as a shock.
Light has a brief moment of hope before Ryuk betrays him by adding his name to the Death Note. Despite being such a powerful and intimidating figure, Light’s death is surprisingly peaceful and reflective.
Cowboy Bebop
It appears like Cowboy Bebop is the last series to end on a down note. It’s an exciting and uplifting action show about a misfit crew of space bounty hunters. The series is essentially a tragedy, despite all the humour, thrills, and good times that pepper it.
The last minutes of the showdown between Spike and Vicious are the ultimate showdown. Spike wins the fight, but is fatally wounded in the process. In the final moment, he staggers out of the room. He then says, “Bang!” with a finger gun pointed at Vicious’ soldiers. After this, there is a sudden blackout, suggesting that Spike has died. Even now, people are shocked by its ending, which ranks among the all-time greats.
Your Lie In April
First-time viewers of Your Lie in April may be fooled by the film’s opening. The film has the feel of a standard romantic comedy, with its upbeat tone and lots of humor. However, once the audience learns that Kaori has a fatal illness, the entire dynamic shifts. Fans quickly learn to anticipate the worst.
