Adventure fiction series Gintama’s third and final movie, Gintama THE FINAL, will be releasing in Japan on January 8. However, exactly one week after the movie, there will be a new net anime special episode on the online streaming service dTV. This episode will also tie in with the events of the movie.
This announcement was made in a Youtube video by DTV’s channel, with protagonist Gintoki Sakata (voice acted by Tomokazu Sugita) complaining that the movie being promoted as the ‘finale’ of the series is just a method to hype the release; as well as protesting that this video doesn’t have any visuals except for his voice, and no content except for the release date of the special. No other details have been released so far.
Trailer:
Gintama has a 367-episode anime series, which ended in October 2018, two anime films—Gintama: The Movie (2010) and Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya (2013)—and various OVAs and video games, all of which are based on Hideaki Sorachi’s popular manga by the same name. The manga series started in 2003 and ended in 2019, with more than 55 million copies in circulation. It has a total of 77 volumes, and Viz Media has published 23 of its volumes in English. Crunchyroll has the rights to streaming the show.
Gintama THE FINAL will follow the story of the finale of the original manga and feature some new elements as well.
Gintama THE FINAL trailer:
Here is how Crunchyroll describes the show:
In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains, and motorbikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man, however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
