Has the Attack on Titan Manga Ended?

The Attack on Titan manga will end on 9th April with its 139th chapter. It will be the final chapter; however, spoilers have already been leaked.

#aot139spoilers has been trending on Twitter a few days before the chapter’s release date. Fans have posted all kinds of spoilers all over the internet, and it is hard not to come across a few of them.

Bessatsu Magazine has also posted a final message to fans.

How did Attack on Titan’s Manga End?

Chapter 139 of the manga showed the last memories of Eren and his motives. He became the bad guy to unite the world’s forces against a common enemy. Eren is dead once and for all as we see Mikasa burying his last remains.

Mikasa was the one who finally showed Ymir her way to freedom. The Founding Titan is killed, and the Eldians will no longer turn into Titans. The Nine Great Titans also cease to exist, and the rumbling has stopped.

80% of the human population has been wiped before Eren could be stopped. The chapter ends with Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, Annie, and others returning to Paradis as ambassadors to negotiate peace.

Will There be a Sequel?

Sequels and spinoffs are common for manga series, especially if it is as large and popular as Attack on Titan.

Series like Naruto, Dragon Ball, and many others have received sequels. Even Haikyu!! released an extra chapter after the manga ended.

The matter of negotiations with Eldia is still a debatable issue. There is no way that things will go smoothly.

Thus, we definitely deserve a chapter where we know for sure if the violence has ended. Of course, the open ending of the original manga is also respectable.

If you cannot wait for a sequel series and are suffering from the manga-ending-blues, then check out Attack on Titan’s existing spinoff manga:

  • Attack on Titan: Junior High
  • Attack on Titan: Before the Fall
  • Attack on Titan: No Regrets
  • Spoof on Titan
  • Attack on Titan: Lost Girls

There are many areas of the manga that can serve as opportunities to create other sequels, like more masquerades of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin when they had just joined the survey corps.

After the tragic ending of the main story, this would serve as a much-needed ointment, but I doubt Isayama would be so motherly.

A sequel featuring Gabi and Falco would also be nice. Yes, I know that 50% of the AOT fandom hates her, but I promise the ending will diffuse your feelings towards her.

Hajime Isayama seems ready to take a break as soon as possible. So, we cannot expect a sequel anytime soon. A different writer like Ryo Suzukaze (writer of “Before the Fall”) might take charge.

We must also keep in mind that a sequel is not always the best idea. Milking a perfect series would do us no good.

There is still the second cour of Attack on Titan’s anime that will be aired in 2022. We will get to see Eren die again and relive our trauma. Till then, why not read or watch the fluffier versions of the series?

About Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan was a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. Kodansha publishes it in the Bessatsu Shonen Magazine.

The manga began serialization on September 9th, 2009, and continues to date with 30 tankōbom formats.

Attack on Titan follows humanity settled within three concentric walls to protect themselves from the terrifying titans that prey on them. The emergence of a deadly Titan unleashes chaos.
