Clannad Creator Jun Maeda to Release A Game After 13 Years
Given how some of the successful franchises are inspired by visual novels, it’s not surprising how these worlds are now closely associated with each other. One of the most recognizable names in both of these is Jun Maeda, and now he is back with his first game in over 13 years called Heaven Burns Red.

The writer and music producer is renowned for series like Kannon, Clannad, and Angel Beats! which were all originally visual novels. While staying true to his roots, his new offering seems to be a little different.
The official website for Heaven Burns Red has released a promotional video for the upcoming game. The game is a collaboration between Jun Maeda visual novel brand Key and game developer Wright Flyer Studios.
It will be released in 2021 for iOS and Android devices.
The PV begins with a short introduction of the main characters. While the game seems to retain the traditional cut scene and interaction style from visual novels, it also features some RPG mechanics like open-world movement and full-blown boss battles.
The story revolves around Ruka Kayamori, a Seraph Corps member, the only hope against a mysterious lifeform called Cancer. Cancer has taken over most of the world, and only those who wield Seraph can hope to defeat them.
As expected from a Jun Maeda game, the art style and character design are absolutely gorgeous. It somehow manages to hold up even in the 3D gameplay situations that are presented in the PV.

While this is likely to be inaccessible for English speakers, for the time being, do not be surprised if we get an anime adaptation by next year.

Heaven Burns Red is an upcoming RPG game for iOS and Android devices from Wright Flyer Studios and Jun Maeda’s visual novel brand Key. The game features all the traditional RPG mechanics along with the character interactions and cut scenes from visual novels.
The story of the game centers around Ruka Kayamori, a member of the Seraph Corps, who are the only hope against Cancer. Cancer are a mysterious lifeform that has taken over most of the world and can only be defeated by those who wield Seraph, an anti-Cancer weapon.
