Demon Slayer Manga Breaks Yet Another Record For Sales
The coronavirus pandemic is still a major threat to the world but despite that people in Japan are swarming the theatres to watch the “Demon Slayer– Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train” anime movie which was released in Japan on 16th October 2020.
The story of Tanjiro trying to avenge his family’s death while proving to be the greatest demon slayer has become a huge success.
The Mugen Train movie quickly earned US$30 million in the first three days of screening garnering a lot of media attention.
It was no surprise when news came of all 22 Volumes of the “Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba” taking the top 22 spots of the Oricon’s comic sales chart for the week of October 19-25.
Demon Slayer Movie Week-1 Success
This is a grand success for the franchise as no manga had ever topped the record since Oricon’s first sales chart back in 2008.
The 22nd Volume of the series is still in the #1 spot for four consecutive weeks selling over 326,000 copies. The manga broke its own record by gathering sales six times more from the time of release.
However, this is not the first record set by the manga. Earlier in the month of February, the series took the top 19 spots with the then recent Volume 19 placed at #1. Volume 20 took #1 and #2 for the regular and limited versions of the manga.

Well, popularity might be the best answer to your question but, let us explain it to you more elaborately.
- The movie released after a long lockdown period with no movie screening. So, fans were eager to get some normal day-to-day activity and watch an anime film in the theatres.
- The movie screens were allowed to seat moviegoers to their full capacity and some theatres even screened it more than 40 times a day owing to their huge profit margin.
Demon Slayer: Movie Release, One week Full Seats Allowed
- The movie did not have any competition during its release due to the long coronavirus lockdown period. So, fans dived into the only movie they could watch in theatres.
- Word of mouth quickly spread with the rise in popularity of the movie and fans from all around the world also took interest in the movie and manga.
- The ever so popular manga thus received attention for all 22 Volumes of the Kimetsu no Yaiba series due to the huge success of the anime film. And some fans were ready to dive into some more facts laid in the manga after watching the movie.
Oricon revealed that the franchise has sold about 90.518 million copies of the manga, taking #2 spot for most sold manga of any franchise.
It received the eighth manga title from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine to reach 100 million copies already in circulation making it the second-highest selling manga of 2019 from Shueisha while One Piece took the #1 spot.
The manga ended in May of 2020.
