In the present episode, things take a dark turn for our heroes and Tanjiro blames it on his lack of focus. He must regain his courage in Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2 Episode 17 and save his comrades.
It takes a great amount of concentration to defeat a demon. And when it is someone from the Upper rank, it really does become a huge chore to maintain total focus throughout the prolonged battle.
Tengen is an incredibly caring person. We see the past when he and his wives have fled from home. They are visiting the family grave and the man regrets not having a drink with his dead siblings. He remembers them every day he lives. He vows to live a flashy life for their sake.
We also see his relationship with Hinatsuru. Of his wives, she is the most feminine unlike the tomboyish Makio and the childish and loud Suma. They have many heartfelt moments together but Hinatsuru is probably the one closest to him and the most sensible of the three.
In the present, Gyutaro parries Tanjiro and Tengen easily. His varied attacks leave the two fighters behind and he goes to capture Hinatsuru, the one who had managed to paralyze him. Tengen is intercepted by Daki’s relentless obi sashes and is unable to save his wife.
Tengen remembers how he and his wives have planned to live a quieter life, away from the fighting. They would do it once this mission is over. But at the moment, it seems like Hinatsuru won’t survive the battle.
Tanjiro goes to help. Since Gyutaro underestimates him, Tanjiro manages to unleash a great attack. He combines his water breathing with hinokami kagura. The former keeps his body stable while the latter strengthens his attack allowing him to rescue Hinatsuru. This is Tanjiro’s personal style in battle.
As Tanjiro and Tengen have trouble fighting Gyutaro, Inosuke and Zenitsu are having a hard time beating Daki. Finally, Tengen pulls himself away along with the demon and they lock into a great duel. Tanjiro goes to help the other two.
What follows is perfect teamwork. Tanjiro and Zenitsu do their best to fend off all the obi sashes, clearing a path for Inosuke. The boar charges in and manages to cut off Daki’s head and run away. All that remains is to defeat Gyutaro.
Suddenly, Inosuke is stabbed by Gyutaro! Tanjiro sees that inosuke is near death and Tengen is unconscious with a chopped-off arm! Tanjiro is ashamed for allowing his friends to receive fatal injuries and he apologizes to them all.
Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2 Episode 17 will show us the fate of Tengen and Inosuke. The former has lost an arm and he is essential if this fight is to be won. The latter has been poisoned and must be saved.

Tanjiro’s Attack On Gyutaro?
We have known for a while that Gyutaro is more than less strong than Tengen himself. Tanjiro holds no candle to this fearsome demon. And yet, our hero managed to save Hinatsuru.
This was possible because Gyutaro highly underestimates Tanjiro, rightfully. Tanjiro’s water-breathing is too weak to pose a threat while his body is too exhausted to perform a full Hinokami Kagura.
However, Tanjiro remembers his training. His master taught him the techniques of water breathing, and while he can’t master them to the extent that Giyu did, he can use them elsewhere. Tanjiro forms his own style by combining the two.
Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2 Episode 17 might show him use this once more because he needs it now more than ever.
Why did Inosuke get stabbed?
The plan worked!
Inosuke managed to behead Daki with the help of Tanjiro and Zenitsu. But this momentary victory made them careless. They were sure that Tengen was holding Gyutaro back and stopped focusing there.
Instead, Inosuke was talking to Daki while Tanjiro and Zenitsu protected his back. Unfortunately, neither of them expected the attack from Gyutaro, leading to what we saw at the end of the episode.
