We witness the nuances and struggles of the palace lifestyle as Oscar François de Jarjayes tries to climb up military ranks and Marie Antoinette marries the king of France. 

Following Marie Antoinette’s famous real-life quote, “Let them eat cake!”, the series dwells on class struggles and the upheavals of the infamous French revolution.

During the San Diego Comic-Con virtual event on the 24th of July, Udon Entertainment revealed that they will release The Rose of Versailles Episodes manga as a two-volume omnibus series in late spring 2022.

The company also commented that

we have taken our experience from last time so we have already been deep in the works of these volumes when we [made] this announcement.

Since we’re on the topic of history, Ikeda launched the original manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Margaret magazine in 1972. (I wasn’t even born at this point!) 

The author published the first 16-page “Rose of Versailles Episode” one-shot in 2013, 40 years after the end of the original series.

The 14th volume of the manga shipped in 2018 and confirmed that it was the last compiled volume for the “episodes” series.

Well, to our surprise (and benefit!), it appears that we’ll be getting another Rose of Versailles Episodes manga!

About The Rose of Versailles

The Rose of Versailles is a famous shoujo manga by author Ryoko Ikeda. It was published from 1972 to 1973. It has also been adapted into an anime.

The story focuses on Lady Oscar who has been raised as a man to serve as the heir to her father’s position as leader of Palace Guards. However, she is caught between her sense of justice and her loyalty as a revolution brews amongst the oppressed classes.
