Follow the Cute Adventures of Sumikko Gurashi in Their Upcoming Film
You might have seen the characters of Sumikko Gurashi on stationery, but these cute animals have an empire of their own. The franchise has been featured in all sorts of merchandise, games, and even a movie.
The first movie of the franchise, Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-up Book and The Secret Child, was a huge domestic hit that even won an award at the Japanese Movie Critics Awards.
Now, it’s back with a second movie with director Takahiro Omori(Natsume’s Book of Friends) and Studio Fanworks(Aggressive Retsuko) holding the reigns.
The official website for Sumikko Gurashi: The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night has released a promotional video for the upcoming film. The movie will debut in Japanese theaters on November 5, 2021.
The PV features the scenes from the group’s camping trip on the hill. They then recall a legend surrounding the place that magical creatures visit the town once every five years on the night with the full moon.
It features narration from Yoshihiko Inohara. An alternate version of the PV features narration from Manami Honjo.
The main visual for the second movie was also released.

About Sumikko Gurashi
Sumikko Gurashi is a set of fictional characters produced by the Japanese company San-X. The name roughly translates to “life in the corner”. The main Sumikko characters are Shirokuma, a polar bear who dislikes the cold, Penguin? who is unsure of being a penguin, Tonkatsu, a piece of leftover pork cutlet, Neko, a timid and anxious cat, and Tokage, a dinosaur who pretends to be a lizard. Minor Minniko characters include Furoshiki, a polka dot furoshiki cloth, Zassou, a weed with a positive attitude, and Tapioca, multi-colored leftover tapioca pearls.
The franchise has a lot of merchandise, such as stationery, plush toys, and clothing. Books, mobile apps, and video games based on the franchise have also been produced. It also has two animated films which are produced by Studio Fanworks.
