Freeform Cancels Mermaid Series Siren after Three Seasons
The TV series Siren has been ‘silenced’ by Freeform. The cable channel has cancelled the mermaid drama series after airing three seasons.
Set in a small village of Bristol Cove, the show explores the legend of the fishing village being home to mermaids once upon a time. When the legend is proven to be true, the battle between man and sea takes a very vicious turn. The merpeople, as every potterhead likes to call them, are predatory beings who will return to reclaim their right to the ocean.
It all starts with a new village visitor, a girl named Ryn, who could prove all the legends as true. Ryn catches the eye of local marine biologist Ben, and when he begins to show interest, fellow marine biologist Maddie becomes suspicious.
Others in town, like deep-sea fisherman Xander, are on a quest to discover the truth that is out there, and Helen, the town eccentric, knows more about the mysterious creatures than she lets on.
In season three, a dangerous, sophisticated new mermaid arrives in Bristol Cove, challenging Ryn’s leadership and igniting an epic undersea battle between rival tribes.
Meanwhile, Ben’s shocking decision to let a reporter die has ripple effects in his relationship with Maddie as well as Ryn. All of this is complicated by the fact that Ryn’s baby is being carried by a surrogate, who must be protected at all costs.
Siren stars Eline Powell, Alex Roe, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Ian Verdun and Rena Owen.
The ratings of Siren, formerly known as The Deep, did drop quite a bit since season one. However, the show has remained one of Freeform’s highest-rated series. The de facto series finale, titled “The Toll of the Sea”, aired May 28.
Season three of Siren averaged a 0.11 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 408,000 viewers. Compared to season two, that’s down by 26% in the demo and down by 14% in viewership.
