Hulu Cancels Acclaimed Music Store Comedy High Fidelity
It’s a disappointment, Hulu. Why did you cancel the one show helping me get over a breakup?
It’s true, y’all. High Fidelity is off the cards for Hulu after only one season. The music store series led by Zoe Kravitz had received a good amount of critical acclaim. However, that did not stop Hulu from discontinuing the series units platform.
There will not be another season of Rob Brooks’ (Zoe Kravitz) story, the owner of a hip record store who would revisit her past relationships through music and pop culture. All this while she tried to get over her one true love. The series was based on the 1995 novel by Nick Hornby and another 2000 John Cusack movie adapted off of it.
The cast also includes Da’Vine Joy Randolph, David H. Holmes, Jake Lacy, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Like many other streaming services, Hulu does not release ratings like the TV channels. However, High Fidelity received a whole lot of critical praise. It stands with 7.7 ratings on IMDb and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.
Unpretentious characters, not sugar-coating the post-breakup obsession and a refuge in good music – the show had a lot to offer. However, all that couldn’t stop it from being discontinued.
In fact, according to Deadline, the decision to cancel the series followed lengthy deliberations at Hulu. ABC Signature even extended the cast’s options by a month so the streamer could spend more time making the decision. But a positive outcome wasn’t reached.
But we sincerely hope the show is picked up elsewhere. In fact, High Fidelity was one of two productions on Hulu that were originally intended for Disney+. The other one being Love, Victor. However, both were later moved to Hulu. A decision about Victor’s fate hasn’t been announced but a renewal seems likely.
The romcom premiered this year on February 14.
