Kung Fu Reboot Series Gets New Star – New Amsterdam’s Vanessa Kai
Kung Fu just got a degree hotter! Vanessa Kai, of the New Amsterdam fame, is now officially a part of Kung Fu – the reboot series of the original TV show which is coming up soon on The CW.
Actress Vanessa Kai has joined Olivia Liang on the series, which also stars David Carradine. Tzi Ma, Kheng Hua Tan, Jon Prasida, Shannon Dang, and Eddie Liu.
A quarter-life crisis causes Nicky Shen, a young Chinese-American woman from San Francisco to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China.
But when she returns to the US, she finds her hometown is overrun with crime and corruption, and her own parents are at the mercy of a powerful triad.
Going forth, her martial arts skills and Shaolin values along with help from Nicky’s tech-savvy sister, pre-med brother, ex-boyfriend and new love interest, help bring criminals to justice.
All this even as the search for the ruthless assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her, continues.
According to the latest cast addition announcement, Kai will play Pei-Ling Zhang, a skilled fighter, spiritual guide, and mentor to Nicky Shen (Liang).
Zhang (Kai) will be one of dozens of monks that lived and trained in an all-female Shaolin temple buried deep in the mountains of Yuanyang province.
After her tragic death at the hands of a mysterious assassin, Pei-Ling will live on in Nicky’s memory, evoking the lessons and skills her mentor taught her at the monastery.
But as Nicky hunts down Pei-Ling’s murderer, she will discover her beloved Sifu had her own dark secrets… and will learn that Pei-Ling’s past might hold the key to Nicky’s future.
A premiere date for the new series has not yet been revealed but it is not set to come out before 2021.
