Yes, I know that manga and anime do not have a good track record with films, but maybe that is about to change?

The upcoming film’s news is bound to interest Made in Abyss fans as the franchise gets more adaptations. Will we get a praiseworthy fantasy land or another disappointment of a film?

The feature film adaptation of the Made in Abyss manga is currently in the early production stage of receiving a feature film by Sony Columbia Pictures.

Kevin McMullin will be adapting the manga to a script for the film. His previous works include Low Tide and First Harvest.

Vertigo Entertainment and Masi Oka are producing the project. They have previously collaborated on the 2017 Death Note film. The mention of Death Note’s movie does leave a sour taste in my mouth, but hey, let’s keep our hopes up!

Death Note’s live-action film already has a sequel in the works. A live-action series for The Promised Neverland is also in development at Amazon.

More and more live-action adaptations are being planned nowadays. As glad as I am that manga and anime are getting the recognition they deserve, I also hope that the adaptations follow the original material closely.

Made in Abyss has a lot of fantasy details and coupled with the existence of a mysterious cave and a half-robot boy, it is a hard feat to pull off.

I hope that the upcoming film shows an improvement on live-action adaptations and Made in Abyss deserves an on-point movie.

About Made In Abyss

An orphaned girl named Riko lives in the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth.

The town surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the Earth, which is commonly called the Abyss.

The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilization long gone, and is, therefore, the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find.

Some legendary Cave Raiders earn the title of White Whistle, one of them being Riko’s mother, Lyza.

Riko’s longing in life is to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a White Whistle. One day she discovers a robot resembling a human boy in the Abyss and names him Reg.

Riko and her friends sneak Reg into Belchero and quickly welcome him into their close-knit group.

Sometime later, a balloon reaches the surface from the depths of the Abyss containing pages of discoveries made by Lyza, as well as a message for Riko stating she is waiting at the bottom of the Abyss.

Riko, determined to find her mother, bids farewell to her friends and departs to the Abyss with Reg as her companion.
