One Piece: In Egghead, will Luffy and Lucci fight again?

BEWARE: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS! This article includes plot details from the manga One Piece.

After two more chapters, it’s clear that the Egghead Island story arc is winding down quickly in One Piece. Although the story arc was brief, it provided more than we expected, including insights into the history of the Ancient Kingdom, the Im, Vegapunk, the Dragon, the Seraphim, and more.

In Chapter 1068, CP0 travels to Egghead Island to murder Vegapunk, who, like Ohara, knows too much about the Ancient Kingdom. Stussy, Rob Lucci, and Kaku try to use Seraphim S-Bear to fly onto the island after being promoted from CP9 to CP0.

However, the Straw Hats have also joined Egghead. Vegapunk has asked to be taken off the island so he can find the antiquity energy source that can power the world, and they have just agreed to his request.

As the chapter concludes, Lucci and Luffy have what could be the defining showdown between the two protagonists. Consequently, many viewers are wondering if there will be a rematch between Luffy and Lucci on Egghead Island.

The chances of a rematch between Luffy and Rob Lucci in a one-on-one setting on Egghead Island are low. Even if Lucci has grown stronger since Enies Lobby, Luffy is a Yonko now, having vanquished the world’s strongest creature, the Kaido. Considering the situation in Ohara, a fight between Robin and Lucci seems more likely.

Who would win in a rematch between Luffy and Lucci?

When they were both in Enies Lobby, Lucci and Gear 2 Luffy were equally powerful. Forcing Luffy to use Gear 3 for the first time, he was the most formidable foe he had ever faced. Though he barely made it, Luffy was able to defeat Lucci. Even more importantly, he has progressed greatly since then.

It doesn’t matter how powerful Lucci is now; Luffy would win a one-on-one fight with him.

By using Gear 5: Nika, Luffy “became” Joy Boy and vanquished Emperor Kaido. His crew’s strength has increased by a factor of three, and he also possesses all three varieties of Haki, a particularly potent Devil Fruit. To say nothing of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, or Jinbe could be enough to to defeat Lucci.

That doesn’t mean I’m giving Lucci short shrift, though.

In addition to his Advanced Armament Haki, Lucci now has the Mythical Zoan Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard. He has the ability to perform Seimei Kikan, transforming his body into different shapes that increase his power and potential, most notably his Rokushiki ability.

Rokushiki is Lucci’s unique selling point. His Devil Fruit powers and this new ability will allow him to use techniques like Rokugan, which ultimately led to Luffy’s need for Gear 3.

Former Warlords acknowledged Lucci’s strength, and his intelligence and prospect were on par with Who’s Who.

Even if we assume Lucci is stronger than Who’s Who, any member of the Monster Trio should have no difficulties defeating him. Incidentally, Who’s Who was defeated by Jinbe in Wano.

I really, really, really hope Lucci Awakens his Devil Fruit so we can see a real-life example of a Mythical Zoan Awakening. But even at his strongest, Luffy will still be ahead of him in terms of raw strength.

Reasons Why Luffy and Lucci Won’t Ever Fight

In addition to the fact that Luffy would easily win a one-on-one fight with Lucci, there are other reasons to believe that another Luffy vs Lucci showdown is unlikely to occur.

1. CP0 will be battled by Vegapunks, Bonney, Kuma, and Seraphim

One must first remember that there must be some rationale for CP0’s location at Egghead. Since CP0 has learned secrets about the Ancient Kingdom and the Void Century battle from Ohara, the Celestial Dragons have given him orders to eliminate Vegapunk (all seven of him).

Even without the Straw Hat Pirates’ intervention, CP0 will have a difficult time keeping their attention off of Vegapunk’s clones.

Once CP0 releases S-Bear aka Seraphim Kuma and Vegapunk’s clones mobilize S-Snake aka Boa Hancock, S-Hawk aka Mihawk, and S-Shark aka Jinbei, the odds of victory for Vegapunk’s side are pretty high.

Lilith, Shaka, and the Straw Hats can easily handle the Seraphim even if Sentamaru, who has been put in charge of them, flips at the last minute.

Keep in mind that the real Bartholomew Kuma has deserted the Revolutionary Army and is probably making his way to Egghead because he knows his daughter, Jewelry Bonney, is in trouble there.

Possible match-ups include Kuma versus S-Bear/S-Kuma, Bonney versus Stussy, Jinbe versus S-Shark/S-Jinbei, Zoro versus S-Hawk/S-Mihawk + Kaku, and Sanji versus S-Snake/S-Boa.

When it comes to Lucci, the most I can imagine is a brief clash with Luffy before a distraction ends things before they escalate into a full-fledged fight.

Lucci may have recently one-shotted Atlas or Punk-05, one of Vegapunk’s satellites who had provided Luffy with food via the Automatic Cooking Machine, which may have contributed to the ensuing conflict. I can understand why Luffy would be upset to learn that Lucci punched the person who fed him.

2. Robin will avenge herself

Due to their previous altercation before the time jump, Lucci and Robin fighting is more likely.

Because Luffy wanted to prove he wasn’t fighting for himself but for his nakama, his battle with Lucci in the Enies Lobby arc was both dramatic and impactful.

The Straw Hats were on Robin’s side and wanted to set him free, but Lucci and the rest of the CP9 agents had orders to keep him from getting away.

After that incredibly moving “I want to live” speech, Robin has earned a good whooping from Lucci.

In addition, Vegapunk essentially claims to carry the will of Ohara, the will of Professor Clover, archaeologist and director of the Ohara library, in chapter 1066.

Vegapunk’s mind contains all the answers to the mysteries that Ohara solved. Thanks to Vegapunk, Ohara’s fight wasn’t in vain, and since Robin is the only remaining member of Ohara, she will do whatever it takes to defend Vegapunk from the CP0.

Furthermore, we know that CP0’s initial objective was to kidnap Robin. All the more motivation for her to strike back and prove she deserves the title “Light of the Revolution.”

This time around, Luffy’s nakama will be the ones to do battle. As an added bonus, this would show just how much the Straw Hat crew, including Robin, who we haven’t seen in action much, has improved.

3. Lucci Might Turn Against the WG

A less likely but still possible outcome is that Lucci will grow disenchanted with the World Government and start acting independently.

Only Lucci had previously questioned the World Government’s orders in CP0.

He voiced his curiosity about the connection between the events in the kingdom of Lulusia and the plot to kill Vegapunk, the most useful man in the world. Due to rebel activity, Im had eliminated Lulusia from existence.

The ability to convert enemies into allies is another one of Luffy’s unique skills. As an added bonus, he flipped the Who’s Who book.

Lucci could follow in Crocodile’s footsteps and adopt his ways, which could lead him to the Cross Guild. Even if he isn’t Luffy’s enemy, he is still Luffy’s rival.

How likely is it that Luffy will face off against Lucci?

Due to the ever-changing nature of One Piece, another Luffy vs. Lucci fight might actually happen.

If Luffy has truly improved since his last fight with Lucci, this would be a great chance to demonstrate it. If they fight again, he should be able to easily dispatch Lucci.

The story up to this point has been proof enough that Luffy is gaining influence, so we don’t need any external evidence to confirm this. He’s turned into a Yonko, for Pete’s sake.

In a fun twist, however, Lucci may try to kidnap or kill Robin as a direct jab at what Vegapunk just revealed about Ohara and a callback to Enies Lobby.

CP0 was, after all, given the assignment to round up Robin. If this happened, Luffy would finally commit to defeating Lucci, and we could have a real rematch.

One Piece

Japanese mangaka Eiichiro Oda created and draws One Piece. Since the 22nd of July 1997, it has been syndicated in Shueisha’s Weekly Shnen Jump.

Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, is a man who had procured everything in this world. Upon reaching the tower of execution, his final words were, “My treasures?” If you really want it, you can have it. These words, “Look for it; I left all of it at that place,” sent many dreamers out to sea in search of One Piece and the Grand Line. A new era had begun!

To achieve his goal of becoming the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also sets sail for the Grand Line in search of the fabled One Piece.
