Creators of epics like BLAME! and Knights of Sidonia have brought us yet another fantasy saga called Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. The title might look self-explanatory, but I promise you that there’s more to it.

Tsutomu Nihei and Polygon Pictures is a popular duo that has created magic for every action-fantasy lover. Be it the BLAME! series or Knights of Sidonia, this pair has never let us down.
After so long, Tsutomu Nihei and Polygon Pictures have joined forces again for the Kaina of the Great Snow Sea (Ōyukiumi no Kaina) TV anime. The anime’s promotional video reveals its January 2023 debut.
Another great thing about this anime series is that Crunchyroll will be hosting a world premiere of its first four episodes at the expo on August 6. I hope you all have your passes ready.
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is about a fateful encounter during an apocalypse, a theme Polygon and Nihei like to play with. It follows the protagonist Kaina who lives atop Tenmaku or Orbital Trees, with their roots in the ground and tops stretching into space.
One day, Kaina comes across Liliha, princess of a country named Atland in the Great Snow Sea. This was unusual as people from the ground didn’t come up, and Liliha was found unconscious in an air balloon.
Now Kaina must journey beyond Tenmaku and ensure Liliha gets home safely.

Nihei is the master of high fantasy and I have a feeling that this one will surpass his previous works.
Also, having Pain and Reiner Braun’s voice actors in one is something I’d pay any amount to see on screen.
About Ōyukiumi no Kaina
Ōyukiumi no Kaina is a “girl-meets-boy high fatasy” series by Tsutomu Nihei. Itoe Takemoto will illustrate the manga and Kodansha will release it in February 2022. It’s anime adaptation will be released in early 2023.
The story follows Kaina and Liliha, who live in a world covered by the Great Snow Sea. People live on giant trees that have sprung from the land, and Kaina lives there as well. Liliha is a princess of a small country in the Great Snow Sea.
Their encounter future adventures will lead to a huge change in their world.
