Re: Zero (Season 3) Episodes 65 and 66

It’s the end of Re: Zero Season 3. It was full of action and interesting characters, but in my mind, it wasn’t as good as season 2. My review for Re: Zero Season 3 will probably not be available for some time, since I’m very behind on writing reviews. But I doubt I will give it higher than 7/10 since it had so many moments that just didn’t reach me – like the story of Theresia.

At the end of the day, I wish Re: Zero was better, because it has so much potential as a good dark fantasy. I love the animation, colors, and fantasy lore. Some of the character writing is also great. It’s a shame the show is riddled with misogyny. Complaints aside, let’s talk about the last two episodes. Note: episode 65 is Season 3 episode 15, and episode 66 is Season 3 episode 16.

  1. Episode 65: A Hideous Dinner Party
  2. Episode 66: The Result of the Battle for Priestella

Episode 65: A Hideous Dinner Party

Episode Rating: 7/10

The episode spent significant time on the fight between Lye (Gluttony) and Otto’s group. During the clashing, there was of course a lot of dialogue, during which we learned something important about Lye and his Authority. I was sort of on the right track when I interpreted him as having multiple personalities. He is apparently able to tap into the minds and memories of those he’s devoured. He basically carries around all the people he’s eaten inside of him.

In order to devour someone, Lye needed to touch them and know their name. Since nobody knew Otto’s name, he was relatively safe, but one of the soldiers in the group got devoured. Nobody could remember him. Additionally, the Authority of the second Gluttony, Roy Alphard, worked the same way. One of the people inside Roy was Julius’ younger brother. Although Julius couldn’t remember having a younger brother, he sensed that something was seriously fucked up about Roy while they fought.

Julius charged in angrily, but we didn’t see the result of his attack besides a bit of bloodsplatter. Since we don’t know what happened to Julius yet, let’s go back to the other Gluttony – Lye Batenkaitos. Knowing that he couldn’t be “eaten” by Gluttony’s Authority, Otto charged in and tried to subdue Lye. However, he underestimated the insanity of the cursed child, who began to literally chew on his fingers in an attempt to devour him. Luckily, Beatrice returned at just that moment.

While Otto and Beatrice faced Lye Batenkaitos, Albaran was still fighting Capella. There were more painful attempts made by the dragon girl to flirt with Aldabaran. Eventually, she morphed into her dragon form, but that was exactly what Aldabaran wanted. He set off the trap planned ahead of time. The entire building caved in on Capella. It should have crushed her completely. However, she was back in only a few minutes, regenerating and reforming herself using the bodies of rats.

Capella spoke for a moment to Anastasia and Felix, who had just reunited with Aldabaran outside the collapsed building. During the talk, Capella showed off her Gospel, but objected to the idea that she was just following the orders of a book. In Capella’s insane mind, her “love” for Al and the others was “genuine” an not just an order from a higher authority. After summoning a pack of mabeasts to keep her opponents busy, Capella retreated. Al, Felix, and Anastasia were forced to run.

(Side Note: There was a strange moment before Capella reappeared during which Aldabaran pointed his sword at Anastasia. This was after Felix stated that Anastasia used magic to fight Capella earlier. According to Aldabaran, Anastasia Hoshin shouldn’t be able to use magic. He was immediately suspicious of her, but Felix convinced him to stand down and not create more trouble right now.)

Reinhard came to rescue Al and company after hearing Felix’s desperate cries through telepathy. The hoard of mabeasts was instantly wiped out by Reinhard’s power. That’s all for episode 65. Now it’s finally time for the last episode of season 3.

Episode 66: The Result of the Battle for Priestella

Episode Rating: 7/10

Beatrice and Otto worked together using magic crystals to fight Lye. However, they had a finite number of magic crystals to use. Fortunately, Felt arrived with the “metia” – AKA magical relic. It was a sorcery staff of some kind, and since Beatrice recognzied it and said “mother,” it was probably a relic belonging to the Witch of Greed. Felt and Beatrice defeated Lye, but didn’t completely finish him off before the third Gluttony arrived.

The third version of the Arch-Bishop of Gluttony was Rui, who could shapeshift. She first appeared in the form of a grown man, but then reverted to – big surprise – a little girl. She had the same sharp teeth as her brothers Roy and Lye. Rui seriously wounded Otto, slicing open his legs before he knew what was happening. Then she retreated.

(Side Note: I almost forgot to mention that we discovered one of Lye’s weak points. When he attempted to devour Felt, it didn’t work, and he acted like he was poisoned. According to Lye, that means Felt was using a fake name. Felt asserted that this was her real name, given to her by Old Man Rom, but it probably wasn’t her “original” name. Her parents, who abandoned her, probably gave her a different name before she was adopted by Rom.)

With that, the battles were all over. Greed was dead, the Gluttonies and Lust escaped, and Wrath was wounded and captured. Subaru tried to interrogate her with Emilia there for backup, but it didn’t do much good. Sirius only acted extremely creepy and swore to drag out her lover, Petelguese, from inside Subaru. She did give them one hint, however. Sirius said that the three Gluttonies would certainly come after Subaru again.

There were several more scenes of people treating the wounded and discussing what to do next. It was revealed that Aldabaran was the one who went to wake up Beatrice. In addition, Kiritaka gave them the magic crystal. There were several problems to deal with, such as the fact that many innocent citizens had been turned into mabeasts by Lust. It was decided that Emilia would freeze these victims in cold sleep to buy them time until they found a way to reverse the magic of Lust’s dragon blood.

Anastasia said that there were no major losses on their side, but she wasn’t counting Julius and the men who were “eaten” by Lye Batenkaitos. Nobody could remember Julius anymore since he was “eaten” by Roy. I thought people all went unconscious when their identities were eaten, but Julius was still up and walking around. He happened to run into Subaru, who was the only person who could remember him. And that wraps up the finale of season 3.

I was honestly not super impressed with this ending compared to the conclusion of the first and second seasons. For one thing, it was difficult to swallow the fact that they still haven’t killed Gluttony and cannot reawaken Rem. I’m not one of those people who watch Re: Zero just to fangirl over Rem, but even so, it’s been two full seasons since she was “eaten.” We need her to come back!

That’s my major complaint about the conclusion of season 3, and that’s where I’ll stop for today. Eventually, I’ll write a review of the third season as a whole. Thanks for visiting Anime Rants and have a fantastic day!

~Thanks for reading~
