Science SARU Affirms ‘Kimi no Iro’ Anime Film Debut in 2023
Naoko Yamada is a cinematic magician who creates nuanced, emotionally resonant films. She recently divulged, without providing details, that she has been engaged in some sort of new endeavor with Science SARU.
Fans predicted, based on Yamada’s track record, that it would be an emotionally heavy film, and they were right.
The new Naoko Yamada-directed anime film, titled “Kimi no Iro” (Your Color), will be released in the fall of 2023, as announced by Science SARU. The studio also released a teaser trailer that reveals the film’s premise.
Totsuko, a young girl who can detect the emotional “colors” of others, is the protagonist of this film. She lives in Nagasaki with her family and friends and goes to school there.
Since Totsuko is able to interpret the hues that represent people’s emotions, she is better able to help those she cares about. To keep the peace in her family and among her friends, Totsuko guards them from negative emotions, assesses the situation, and even tells white lies.
After visiting the town’s antique bookshop one day, she meets a gorgeous woman whose radiance is matched only by the vibrancy of her colors, as well as a music-obsessed young man. These three individuals form a band, each contributing their own special set of talents and sensibilities to the mix.
The teaser trailer also revealed the creative team behind the show, with Story Inc. listed as the planner and producer, Reiko Yoshida listed as the show’s scriptwriter, and Kensuke Ushio listed as the show’s composer.
Naoko has previously given us such masterpieces as A Silent Voice and The Heike Story, so I have no doubt that this one will be just as impressive.
It’s looking like we’ll need a lot of tissues for this one.

The anime feature film Kimi no Iro (Your Color), directed by Naoko Yamada and produced by Science SARU, will soon be released. The release date is set for the upcoming fall of 2023.
Our protagonist, a Nagasaki high schooler named Totsuko, has the ability to read the ‘colors’ of people’s emotions. By using this power for good, she is able to shield her loved ones from any negative emotions that may arise.
Totsuko meets a colorful woman and a music-obsessed boy one day in an old bookstore on the outskirts of town. They’re a band made up of three people who share a common sensitivity and emotionality.
