Soichiro Yamamoto, a manga artist most known for creating and illustrating Teasing Master Takagi-san/Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san and Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru/Even So, Ayumu Approaches, announced on Thursday that Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru would be getting a TV anime adaptation via a Tweet.
Here is a translation of his message:
“I’m very happy that ‘Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru,’ which was the first manga that I drew with a ‘story’ in mind in a weekly magazine, will be adapted into an anime. Not only as an author, but also as a viewer, I’m really looking forward to seeing it in action with voices. I’ll be working even harder than before on the original manga, so please give me your support.”

Yamamoto’s two works— Teasing Master Takagi-san, and Even So, Ayumu Approaches have been published in Monthly Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine, respectively. The official Youtube account for the Weekly Shōnen Magazine has published a video saying that the anime would air in 2022; it also features the two main characters: Ayumu Tanaka (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya) and Urushi Yaotome (Konomi Kohara).
Originally published as a webcomic on Twitter in 2018 under the title Shōgi no Yatsu, and then serialised in the aforementioned magazine since March 2019. It has five tankobon volumes so far, with the sixth to be published on the 15th this month.
The series is a romantic comedy about two members of Shogi club at a high school—the self-proclaimed shogi manager, Urushi Yaotome, a second-year high school student, and Ayumu Tanaka, a first-year and a beginner in shogi. Ayumu, who has decided to confess to the other if he wins in shogi—a type of chess— spends his days trying to beat his senpai. Urushi, on the other hand, tries to make Ayumu admit that he likes her, but he never allows his poker face to slip.
