Suzume Dethrones Weathering With You As Japan’s 9th Highest-Grossing Film

All of Makoto Shinkai’s animated features have depicted inspiring, thought-provoking tales of people whose lives are enriched by their relationships with others despite the odds. This holds true for Suzume, Shinkai’s most recent feature, which was produced by CoMix Wave Films and released internationally via Crunchyroll.

One of the year’s most critically acclaimed anime films, Suzume no Tojimari was directed by Makoto Shinkai and received recognition from critics all around the world. The film’s unprecedented success is a crowning achievement for Shinkai, who labored for many years to bring it to fruition.

The latest earnings figures at the Japanese box office prove that Shinkai’s efforts with Suzume are paying off. Shinkai’s current film, Hero, has recently surpassed his previous feature, Weathering With You, in total box office receipts in Japan.

In total, Suzume had made almost 109 million USD, or 14,310,602,380 Japanese yen. This sum is more than his last film’s lifetime Japanese box office profits of 14.23 billion yen.

Another anime film is making steady gains in popularity. The infamous “The First Slam Dunk”, if you will. The First Slam Dunk film has been one of the most anticipated anime releases of the year and has quickly become one of the year’s most talked about anime productions.

Recent months have seen the film climb even higher on the list of Japan’s highest-grossing anime films of all time. Following its recent overtake of Makoto Shinkai’s earlier film Weathering With You, The First Slam Dunk is now in second place.

In terms of domestic box office earnings, the film has surpassed Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You. The result places it at number nine among all anime films and fifteenth overall in Japan.

These movies have done quite well, but they haven’t made as much money as Shinkai’s last picture, Your Name, which is the third highest-grossing Japanese film of all time with a worldwide total of $382 million. Nevertheless, both films have reason to be proud of themselves for having surpassed the major works in their respective genres.

Suzume no Tojimari

The director of the anime film Suzume no Tojimari is Makoto Shinkai. On November 11, 2022, it made its debut. In August of 2022, Shinkai published a novelization of the film.

Suzume, a young woman of seventeen in the film, is the protagonist. She encounters a young man searching for a door. Suzume discovers a mysterious door among the rubble, unlocks it, and thereafter tragedies occur all around Japan. To prevent Japan’s destruction, Suzume must now seal them all.
