The story focuses on the cat, Xiao Hei, who transforms into a man and goes to live a carefree life in the forests, only to find that they are being destroyed by encroaching human settlements.

The 2D-animated film, which evokes Studio Ghibli’s ecological fables, took five years to produce.

So far, the film has been well received, notching up an 8.4 score on user review platform Douban.

Although no news for any international release is here yet, the Japanese release is giving us a ray of hope. Especially the beautiful cover that just got released, is a visual delight.

The PV also shows a unique animation style. The aesthetics and usage of colours throughout the PV are already setting our expectations sky-high.

The series’s creator Zhang Ping, who goes by the name MTJJ, directed the feature. The animation was produced by Beijing Han Mu Chun Hua Animation and MTJJ Animation.

“The animation not only can accompany you to go out of darkness, but also give you an inspiring power to move forward.”

Li Chen, Producer

As a 2D original animation, every second of the film required 12 pictures drawn by him and his team.

This means that the complete film lasting more than 100 minutes required more than 70,000 high-quality drawings, which is why it took more than five years to make, MTJJ explained.

About The Legend of Hei

The story focuses on the titular Luo Xiaohei, a spirit who stole a certain artifact which resulted in him getting weakened and injured.

This prevented him from using most of his abilities, as well as making him unable to transform into his humanoid form, meaning he was stuck in the form of a small, black kitten with a blue tongue.

After escaping those who wounded him, he sought shelter from the rain. The spirit hid inside a cardboard box in an alleyway within a city to rest.

The next day, however, he woke up in a home of a young girl named Xiaobai who, mistaking him for a homeless cat, took him in and named him Xiaohei.
