The Promised Neverland’s Special One Shot Talks About Ray’s Dilemma
Just when fans were hoping for more of The Promised Neverland, Weekly Shonen Jump announced a special one-shot, chapter 181.1 that takes place before the events of the first chapter.
The Promised Neverland by mangakas Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu was an immediate fan favorite on its release, with the unique and shiver-inducing storyline and gorgeous artwork.
The new one-shot released yesterday has 16 pages and a special color page that focuses on Ray (one of the protagonists of the series) as he finds out the truth about the orphanage and his resolve in rescuing his friends from that awful place.
In the special chapter, we see Ray pacing back and forth in the orphanage playground as he reads through the book given by William Minerva.
Ray has finally solved the Morse code and realized the orphanage is just a Farm and the kids are mere food for the horrible monsters that lurk outside.
Ray contemplates about whether or not to share the truth with his friends. He starts thinking about the order in which they might get sold off as food.
That is when Emma praises Norman for his perfect test scores and Ray realizes that the kids with the lowest scores are sent off as food for the creatures.
6 years pass by as Ray prepares for the grand escape and he decides to rescue Norman and Emma as well. Then we see October 12th 2045, when Ray prepares to escape with Norman and Emma.
The ending chapters 180 and 181 of The Promised Neverland manga reveal that Ray’s wishes of escaping the orphanage with Emma and Norman did come true but Emma had disappeared.
It is later revealed that she lost her memories and then when Emma senses a connection with all of them they decide to live together again.
We see all of Ray’s suffering and sacrifices come to fruition by the end of the manga series. He seems happy and content when they all meet Emma once again and his decision of escaping becomes the saving grace for the kids.
The one-shot was indeed beautiful as we don’t see much of the emotional and confused side of Ray during the manga. To top it all off, a season 2 of the mystery series The Promised Neverland was supposed to be released in October 2020 but due to the Covid-19 situation, the release is delayed till January of 2021.
