This year has already given us plenty of exciting new anime to work with, like the genre-upending Wonder Egg Priority, the incredible and absurd Sk∞ (aka Skate the Infinity), and the back half of Season 1 of everyone’s new anti-shonen favorite Jujutsu Kaisen. Horimiya

A much-awaited adaptation of a popular manga, Horimiya is an excellent watch for romance fans. Its title refers to the main couple, Hori and Miyamura, as the anime explores their relationship. From awkward strangers to comfortable partners, Horimiya handles this subject with grace, dignity, and charm. Both characters are likable and bring out the best in each other. Kyouko learns of the meek Izumi’s secret piercings and tattoos. Izumi learns about the popular Kyouko’s inability to have a social life due to her responsibilities at home. The more the two talk, the closer they become, with their relationship quickly evolving into a romantic one.

The Way of the Househusband

Based on one of the funniest manga in recent years, The Way of the Househusband finds a retired yakuza boss adjusting to a domestic life making complicated lunch Bentos for his wife or doing the laundry correctly. If you like the quick, wry, and absurd humor of Netflix’s The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., this anime should be right up your alley.

The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is a fantasy light novel series written by Yusagi Aneko and illustrated by Seira Minami. The Four Cardinal Heroes are a group of ordinary men from modern-day Japan summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc. They are to become its saviors. Melromarc is a country plagued by the Waves of Catastrophe. The four heroes have respectively bestowed a sword, spear, bow, and shield to vanquish these Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, becomes cursed with the fate of being the “Shield Hero”.

Uzumaki

Horror writer/illustrator Junji Ito first brought the world of Uzumaki to life in his original manga series, which has been adapted into various video games, a live-action film, and now a four-episode anime series. The story follows a group of teens living in a town beset by dark spirits, causing the town’s inhabitants to become obsessed with spirals in increasingly gruesome and deadly ways.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

For the last time: Get in the fucking robot, Shinji. The long-awaited conclusion to Hideaki Anno’s revisitation of his groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion should finally be coming to the US this year (it was released in Japan on March 8), after being delayed three times: twice because of COVID-19, and another because of Anno’s involvement in 2016’s Shin Godzilla. It will pick up where Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo left off, revisiting the final battle between humanity and angels.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie

​​​​​​After a successful first-season 24-episode run, Jujutsu Kaisen is ready for another round with a movie. Dubbed Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0, the film is an adaptation of a prequel manga written by the mangaka himself, Gege Akutami, and will be considered part of the series canon. But what exactly is Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0? Sharing the same title as the manga volume, the film is a prequel taking place roughly a year before the start of the anime. However, instead of focusing on Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, or Nobara Kugisaki, the film will focus on a new character: Yuta Okkotsu. Volume 0 serves to tell Okkotsu’s story and explain his ties to Jujustu High and the other students while also showcasing his abilities and personality.

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen

Following a wildly successful first season and a movie of Demon Slayer is a second season, Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen, expected to be equally thrilling. Practically the Entertainment District Arc, Tanjiro and his friends accompany the Hashira Tengen Uzui to an entertainment district where Tengen’s female ninja agents were gathering information on a demon before they suddenly disappeared. In order to investigate, Tanjiro and the others disguise themselves as women to sneak in!

Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is an upcoming supernatural action horror TV anime that is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. MAPPA, the Japanese animation studio. The story revolves around Denji, a young guy who is facing a financial crunch. His father owed a lot of debt to the Yakuza, an organized crime syndicate but passed away before he could repay it. The devils in Denji’s world exist both in the mortal and the hellish world. Denji is aided by Pochita, who manifests people’s fear about chainsaws and looks like a canine. So when Yazuka betrays Denji, it results in the latter’s death. Pochita then serves as his heart in order to revive him. Denji a devil-human hybrid, comes to be known as the eponymous Chainsaw Man.

Jojo’s Bizzare Adventures: Stone Ocean

With five of the manga’s sagas already adapted to anime, Jojo will soon have Part 6: Stone Ocean bring new life to the vibrant franchise. Stone Ocean is the fifth season of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, but it is in essence the 6th story arc. The star is Jolyne Cujoh, the current “Jojo” and the daughter of Jotaro Kujo. She’s arrested in 2011 and sent to the Green Dolphin Street Prison in Florida. There her precarious life becomes even more endangered. Armed with a mysterious pendant that gives her equally mysterious power, she’s informed by her father Jotaro that she was framed by a student of their family’s eternal rival, Dio. Now marked for death in jail, she has to escape and survive.

Shingeki No Kyojin: The Final Season Part 2

Anyone who has the smallest inkling of what anime have likely heard of Attack on Titan. Since it began in 2013, Attack on Titan has firmly established itself as one of the most beloved anime series of all time. The series will be wrapping up for good at the end of the ongoing fourth season. The first part of the final run aired between December 2020 and March this year. It’s now been revealed when the second half will air, with the announcement being made at the end of a concert that celebrated the show’s music. We also now know that the first installment of the final stretch of episodes will be titled Danzai – which can be translated to Sentencing or Judgement. This easily tops the list of the most awaited anime in the winter of 2021.
