“You give me too much credit. These days, I’m just a plain old candy-store owner.”
— Kisuke Urahara in “END OF THE CHRYSALIS AGE“
Kisuke Urahara, the captain of the 12th Division and the founder of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, wasn’t just one of the strongest Shinigami but also the most intelligent. He invented the Hogyoku, which allowed one race to gain the power of another, and hid it inside Rukia Kuchiki. He also trained Ichigo to fight on par with the Captains in just three days to save Rukia.
Soul Society arc (Betrayal)
When Aizen betrays the Soul Society for the Hogyoku, he confronts Kisuke Urahara and reveals the true nature of the Hogyoku, stating that he intended to master it, something Urahara failed to do.
Urahara then attacks him from behind. Meanwhile, Ichigo unlocks Kyoka Suigetsu’s powers for his battle against Aizen. As the intense battle between Hogyoku-infused Aizen and Ichigo was nearing its end, Kisuke Urahara, the mastermind, was just about to put his plan into action.
Fake Karakura Town arc ( Intellect)
During the battle, Ichigo injured Aizen, but just as he was about to land the finishing blow, Ichigo’s Kyoka Suigetsu powers began fading. Aizen seized the opportunity and tried to finish off Ichigo, but suddenly, an energy spike emerged from Aizen’s chest, later revealed to be Kisuke Urahara’s doing.
While firing a Kido at Aizen, Urahara fired another Kido onto Aizen’s back before he fully merged with the Hogyoku. He then explained that the second Kido was a seal, as Urahara knew it was impossible to kill Aizen, so he planned the Kido in advance.
Fake Karakura Town arc (Brilliant Strategist)
Kisuke Urahara already knew that Ichigo wouldn’t be able to defeat Aizen, and he predicted that Aizen would lower his guard after fully transforming.
Urahara further explained that the Hogyoku started working because Aizen’s powers weakened after his fight with Ichigo, and the Hogyoku no longer recognized Aizen as its master. He outsmarted even the character who had planned Ichigo’s entire life
