Will Luffy get Pluton in One Piece? Who else Might get it?

Ever since chapter 1053 of One Piece revealed that Pluton is located in Wano, fans have been wildly speculating what exactly this legendary Ancient Weapon could be and whether it will be Monkey D. Luffy who gets his hands on it.

In chapter 1055, we learned that Pluton is hidden deep below the kingdom of Wano. Kozuki Sukiyaki revealed that in order to retrieve Pluton, they would have to open up their country’s greatest defense – the walls or borders protecting Wano.

Luffy will get Pluton but only during the final battle. The Straw Hats have already departed from Wano, and since Pluton is in/beneath Wano, it’s likely that somebody else will awaken Pluton before Luffy controls it in the end.

Why will Luffy get Pluton in the end?

Luffy already has Shirahoshi, the current incarnation of Poseidon, by his side. As the eventual Pirate King and the one who finds the One Piece and defeats the World Government, it will be Luffy who gains control of all 3 Ancient Weapons.

With Luffy’s connection to Joy Boy through his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, its awakening in the land of Wano, the revelation of old-Wano as potentially being the Ancient Kingdom, Wano becoming Luffy’s first territory, and the resurgence of Pluton into the main story at this particular time, are all indications why Luffy will get Pluton in the end.

Some fans also theorize that there is a connection between the Ancient Weapons and the Voice of All Things. Luffy may be able to utilize the power of Pluton once it is awakened by using the Voice to command it.

So far, there have only been 5 individuals capable of using the Voice of All Things: Gol D. Roger, Kozuki Oden, Momonosuke, the Mermaid Princess Shirahoshi, and Luffy.

In the Fishman Island arc, Princess Shirahoshi uses the Voice to connect to the Sea Kings to save Noah. On two separate occasions, we see Momo use the Voice to command Joy Boy’s elephant-companion Zunesha. Luffy can currently hear both the Sea Kings and Zunesha, but he cannot influence them directly.

This connection between Poseidon, Pluto, Wano, Oden, the Voice, Zunesha, Joy Boy, the Hito Hito no Mi, and the Void Century makes me certain that Luffy will one day get Pluton. But he might not use it.

Apart from the obvious fact that Luffy is the protagonist and will eventually become the strongest character in the series, it just makes sense narratively for Luffy to get Pluton. For starters, he’s the only guy in the series right now who isn’t one bit interested in Pluton.

In chapter 1056, when his crew asks him whether he wants it, he just says, “Nah, I’m good!” It would be fitting for someone not pining after power to gain it, especially a character like Luffy.

Who will get Pluton before Luffy? Who else might get it?

1. Yamato and Momonosuke

Yamato along with Momo might awaken Pluton before Luffy gets it in the end.

Yamato recently joined the Straw Hat Pirates but decided at the last moment to stay behind in Wano to explore it like Oden did. Momonosuke, who is now the new shogun of Wano, is considered by Luffy to be his little brother.

Momo, as shogun, will be in charge of opening the Wano borders, and according to Sukiyaki, the only way to retrieve Pluton is through the literal act of opening Wano’s borders, i.e., breaking down its walls.

It’s extremely likely that Pluton has an explicit connection with Mt. Fujiyama, at the base of which lies original Wano Kuni, the underwater country that was submerged 800 years ago.

Mt. Fuji is an active volcano that hasn’t erupted in years, but is capable of widescale destruction, much like the Ancient Weapons. Pluton itself is named after the Roman God Pluto – God of the Underworld, and Pluton is underwater.

With the volcano terminology – the “sleeping” or “dormant” weapon, I’m confident that Pluton is Mt. Fuji itself, or specifically old-Wano, which rests on the original sunken base of Mt. Fuji.

Earlier, Oden had wanted to open the borders of Wano, which, as we now know, meant activating Pluton. Then, after Kaido and Orochi’s defeat, Momo decided to keep the borders closed for the time being.

This set up, along with the fact that Yamato stayed behind to follow in Oden’s footsteps, makes me believe that this pair will awaken Pluton when the time is right.

2. Blackbeard

Way back during the Reverie Incident in chapter 956, Blackbeard said something super suspicious: He told his crew to pack their bags because they are setting sail to “claim the prize” before the Navy can take it. There’s a good chance that this prize is the Ancient Weapon, Pluton.

Of course, it’s possible that the prize might be Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Mythical Zoan Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, aka Joy Boy’s fruit, perhaps the most powerful DF in the world. Blackbeard is obsessed with collecting the strongest Devil Fruits so this might as well be the case.

But I like the idea of Blackbeard gaining control of Pluton just because it would be interesting to explore that storyline.

The action has just died down in Wano with the Supernovas, Ryokugyu and the Marines, and the Red Hair Pirates departing. Now, the only ones remaining there are the shogun, the samurai, Yamato, and the citizens.

For Blackbeard to attack Wano now would be bang on character; Blackbeard with Pluton is a deadly combination that I’m kind of aching to see.

3. World Government

Alternatively, it’s possible that Akainu orders a siege on Wano to acquire Pluton.

The World Government and the Marines have already shown they can do anything to balance out the power struggle in the world. Obtaining and heartlessly using a weapon like Pluton doesn’t seem far off from the atrocities they have committed over the years.

That plotline would also be very interesting to see.

4. Buggy

The recent revelation that the new Yonko, Buggy, has command over the likes of Crocodile and Mihawk, makes it seem like anything is possible when it comes to Buggy the Clown.

It honestly doesn’t seem too far off for Buggy to try and gain Pluton to use as some sort of leverage to bring down the Government.

While it would be fun to watch, I don’t think it too likely that Buggy comes to Wano right now. He’s too busy wrecking the outside world.

Why Luffy might not get Pluton?

There is a possibility that Luffy might not get Pluton after all, even at the end. The reasoning for this boils down to Franky.

The blueprints of Pluton’s design were preserved in Water 7, passed down a chain of the best shipwrights, eventually landing up in the hands of Franky. Franky later burns these same blueprints in front of Spandam in Enies Lobby.

Franky is the only one who knows how to build a countermeasure for the real Pluton if need be. If Blackbeard or the World Government acquire Pluton, Franky might adapt the Pluton design into the Thousand Sunny, making it Pluton 2.0.

This way, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates would battle an enemy that is almost too strong to defeat. Pluton, as we know, is capable of widescale destruction. Franky’s ultimate ship, i.e., the Thousand Sunny, i.e., Pluton 2.0, would get the limelight.

It would also be a good plotline for the 3 opposing forces to have one of the 3 Ancient Weapons each. If Luffy already has Poseidon, we can guess that maybe the World Government has Uranium, and that Blackbeard will get Pluton in the end. This would be a battle epic enough to be the finale of One Piece.
