Thanks for visiting Anime Rants today. At the time of writing this article, it’s Spring 2025, but Zom 100 aired way back in 2023. Why am I writing about it now? Well, due to certain delays in the release schedule, I didn’t review the last few episodes in 2023. I’m finally just getting around to them now. Sorry for the delay. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my thoughts on the final episode of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

Episode 12: Hometown of the Dead Part 3
Episode Rating: 9/10
This episode was all around fantastic. The visuals were great, the music was epic, and I loved Akira’s idea to pretend to be a zombie. He couldn’t have done it without the girls from the city who could do amazing makeup. Higurashi instantly fell for the trick, gloating over Akira’s zombification. Akira dragged him down off the tractor and made sure Teruo and everyone else was safe. Higurashi was defeated and soon bitten by a zombie.

When Akira asked what Higurashi truly wanted to do, the miserable young man said he only wanted to play in the swimming pool with friends like in the old days. His bitterness, poor choices, and misfortune made him into a monster who lost sight of his true desires. Akira embraced Higurashi, telling him that if he ever became a zombie, they would play together. Akira is truly a sweet person. He was even risking being bit by Higurashi, who was starting to turn into a zombie already. What a selfless and altruistic person.

Akira later asserted that despite everything, he couldn’t bring himself to feel hatred toward Higurashi. This is even further evidence of his big heart. If it were me, I would hate anyone who put my loved ones or my home in danger. It’s not something I choose, but an emotional response that happens automatically. I suppose everyone can’t be as forgiving as Akira.

To get away from the zombies, everyone had to leave the village for now. They would eventually move back in and hunt down the zombies within. Bea broke down the electric fence enclosing the village and Kumano appeared briefly to help the villagers cross the gorge with a makeshift suspension bridge. Everyone was safe at last.

Until now, the narrative had hinted that Akira’s father, Teruo, was terminally ill. It almost sounded like he might have fast-growing cancer. However, this episode humorously revealed that Teruo’s condition was hemorrhoids. His life was not in danger.

After the village was stable again, Akira and his friends decided to leave to go “save the world.” They would try to figure out how to stop the zombies. Before they set off, everyone added something to the notebook (Akira’s bucket list). Kencho wanted to make more people laugh, Bea wanted to “restore Japan to its natural beauty” and Shizuka wanted to become a doctor. It was her childhood dream.

After saying their goodbyes, Akira and company left the village and continued their adventure. That’s the end of Zom 100 – for now. I hope there is eventually a second season someday. Zom 100 was a fun anime.
