Director Of The Secret Invasion Confirms That A Prominent Character Will Not Appear
In spite of rumors to the contrary, Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has stated that a well-known MCU character will not make a cameo appearance in the Disney+ series.
The film Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, as he attempts to stop the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth. Despite having a large and diverse ensemble of MCU actors, one major character who was rumored to join Fury will regrettably not appear in the series.
Director Ali Selim stated that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine would not appear in Secret Invasion in an interview with SFX Magazine (via The Direct).
Ali actually appeared to be genuinely perplexed as to how such a story got started. I don’t know how that got there, the director cried. Selim added his perspective on cameos as well. He believes there will be enough plot-related surprises in the episode, but cameos are “less interesting.” Here is his full statement:
Those things on the internet are quite funny. [Contessa Valentina actress] Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not in the show… I’m not sure how that ended up there!It’s all about surprise, intention and reveal, and repeat. I hope there’s a lot of that in there. But in terms of cameos, that’s less interesting to me than the heart of the story, which I think we really found, and the heart of that story is: ‘Who can you trust?’
Since the series won’t contain any Avengers, it is now widely accepted that there won’t be any notable MCU cameos. Due to the focus of the narrative being Nick Fury’s lone battle against the Skrulls, Rhodey played by Don Cheadle will be the only exception.
The issue here is that due to its format, Secret Invasion cannot keep the same scope of the story it is inspired by. It is a retelling of a key Marvel comics event for context.
Given that the show is pretty engaging, there is no need to worry too much about this. Even though The Avengers’ appearances would increase its popularity, it would not suffer significantly.
According to the show, Fury’s tardiness in helping the Skrulls years later prompted Gravik to seek retribution, therefore it is only fair that Jackson’s persona deals with his issue.
Although Fury’s impending appearance in The Marvels may explain why Captain Marvel was unable to assist him during the Secret Invasion, a cameo by Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel would have made more sense given her connection to the battle.
