‘One Piece Film: Red’ Surpasses ‘Weathering With You’ at Box Office

One Piece Film: Red has been on #1 for seven weeks straight since its release and is on a record-breaking spree in Japan. Given the constantly rising popularity of the anime, this surely doesn’t come as a surprise.

The film had been one of the most anticipated installments of the franchise due to Shanks’ daughter, Uta’s debut. It reveals how the world’s most popular diva is Shanks’ adopted daughter and Luffy’s childhood friend as well.

A story like this is bound to break records and surpass previous films of its kind.

Besides ruling the box office, the One Piece Film: Red has dethroned Weathering With You from the #7 spot of all-time favorite anime films. It has now also become the 13th highest-earning film of all time in Japan.

As of Monday, the film has grossed over 14.94 billion yen (about US$103 million) and crossed the 15 billion yen mark today. It has sold 10.72 million tickets since the release and has earned 580,877,040 yen (about US$4.04 million) during the last weekend.

During its time, Weathering With You earned 14.19 billion yen (US$98 million) and got the #7 spot. One Piece Film: Red has surpassed it by well over a billion yen.

What’s funny is that these statistics are just for Japan, and the film is yet to make its global premiere. Seeing the kind of response it has received on its home turf, I wonder the kind of chaos it will create internationally.

I’m desperately looking forward to the theater experience. Imagine a hall full of One Piece fans for a movie that has raised everyone’s excitement level off the roofs.

There’s not much left to say, except a reminder to book your tickets as soon as they become available in your region.
