Luckily, the franchise has come up with a game that will give us a first-hand experience of Subaru’s repetitive journey through death.

We, the anime viewers, know how the environment is already pretty confusing and sketchy regarding the Royal Selection, and this game takes us to an alternate reality where a sixth candidate appears to claim the throne.

On Friday, the YouTube channel for Spike Chunsoft started streaming an overview trailer for the Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-: The Prophecy of the Throne game. The game will be launched in Japan on January 28.

Don’t worry if you aren’t from Japan! The game launches in North America on January 29 and in Europe on February 5, thanks to the huge popularity of Re:Zero anime and light novel in the West.

In the overview trailer, our hero, Subaru Natsuki, narrates the plot that the game will follow. When everything was set for the Royal Selection, a sixth candidate appears and claims her stake for the throne.

But according to prophecy, only five candidates are supposed to be there. Emila is accused of being the imposter, and once again begins Subaru’s journey to save the girl he loves and fulfil all her dreams.

The franchise is even bringing back the English and Japanese cast for the game. This ensures that the game will give us an overall anime-like experience with the characters’ original voice.

The original author, Tappei Nagatsuki has supervised this alternate story, and Shinichirou Otsuka took care of the character designs. They are the same duo who started it all.

Mayu Maeshime performed the game’s theme song. She also performed the theme song for the latter half of season 2.

Just like the anime, diplomacy and information gathering plays an important role here in this game. The video reveals that the game can be broken into three parts.

  1. Adventure Part: Here, Subaru has to gather information and items from the allies and checkpoints of interest. The mission’s success largely depends on how well you do in this part.
  2. Briefing Part: Here, Subaru has to devise a plan with his allies to complete this mission. The available course of action will change according to the intel you acquired in the previous round.
  3. Mission Part: This is the final part where Subaru has to execute the plan perfectly with the gathered intel. And if anything goes wrong, he might end up returning by death.

The tactical adventure game will be available for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. You can preorder it now.

We have all thought that we would have made more effective decisions if we had the ‘Return by Death’ ability. Now it’s time to prove that to yourself by saving Emilia!

Moreover, who is this sixth candidate, and how will she affect the outcome of the Royal Selection? What answers lie beyond the mysterious web of betrayal and conspiracies? You will have to play the game yourself to find out more.
