Unveiling Blackbeard’s Ship Theory: Who was on it and what happens next
In chapter 1089 of the One Piece Manga, we saw that Blackbeard’s Pirate Ship was heading towards Egghead Island, but since then, we haven’t heard what happened to the ship and who is on it.
Well, I have a pretty good idea about both, and today, I’ll let you in on my theory, so let’s get into it!
Catarina Devon is posing as Jewelry Bonney. Using her shape-shifting abilities from the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyubi no Kitsune
She likely took Bonney’s place during a vulnerable moment when Bonney was going through Kuma’s memories, capitalizing on her less familiar personality traits.
But how did she even reach the Island? Who Else Was On it? And why Bonney? In this article, I answer these questions and more!
1. What happened to the ship? Who was on it?
The ship had already reached the island, and two notable pirates were on the ship, namely Laffitte and Catarina Devon.
This is because out of all the captains of the Blackbeard fleet, only these two weren’t present in the skirmishes of Garp and Law and haven’t been seen since.
Interestingly, Laffitte is a master of infiltration, and so is Devon, as her devil fruit, Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyubi no Kitsune, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows her to transform into a nine-tailed fox.
With this power, she can transform into clones of people, allowing her to impersonate anyone easily.
2. The Theory
After coming onto the egghead island, I believe she cloned herself into one of the people already on the island to fit into them, getting information on what was happening there.
This theory makes sense when you take into account that after the events of Chapter 1089, we directly see the morning of the next day, leaving a large gap where we don’t know what exactly happened. This gap is large enough for Devon to land on the island and take someone’s place.
3. Who is Devon Posing as?
After reading all of that, the next obvious question in your mind is, who is Devon posing as then?
Everybody is a suspect at this point, but the answer becomes quite simple if we were to look through a keyhole and see some hidden details Oda sensei has been dropping us.
One of the most eyebrow-raising shifts in behavior comes from none other than Bonney. We all know Bonney for her quirks and cheeky demeanor, but something’s different this time.
There was a panel where Luffy talked about how Bonney’s behavior was a bit “odd.”
Of course, the Luffy-O-Meter is not the best metric when talking about someone’s emotional behavior, but interestingly, Oda had Luffy call out that Bonney was acting odd.
Using that information, the best guess is to who Devon is posing as would be Bonney.
I. When did the switch take place?
Devon Probably took Bonney’s place when Bonney was going through Kuma’s memories, having a flashback. That would be the perfect place to switch, as Bonney was in a pretty vulnerable state then.
II. Why Bonney?
Bonney is the perfect person to take over as none of the characters know her that well, and, to be fair, her entire personality is food, considering her nickname is ‘Big Eater Bonney.’
Devon could easily impersonate Bonney, considering all she’d have to do is just be hungry all the time.
Bonney is an easier target compared to, Let’s say, one of the strawhats, as they all know each other’s tick that they’d instantly be able to tell if someone would act suspiciously.
4. Conclusion
So there you have it, fellow pirates and adventurers. The Egghead Island Arc continues to surprise, mystify, and tease us with its well-crafted narrative.
Who is Catarina Devon pretending to be? Is Bonney’s odd behavior just the tip of the iceberg? As we wait for the next chapter to cast its light on the shadows, remember that in the world of One Piece, anything can happen, and everything is worth the wait.
Until then, keep theorizing and keep that sense of wonder alive – it makes the journey all the more thrilling!
5. About One Piece
One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997.
The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!
Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. His diverse crew is joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
