Based on Aito Aoyagi’s novel Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau, in which Red Riding Hood plays the role of a sleuthing detective who investigates crimes from various fairy tales (including Cinderella and Hänsel and Gretel), the film follows Red Riding Hood as she works to clear her name. On September 14, Netflix will debut Yuichi Fukuda’s fascinating new take on the classic fairy tales.

The prince is seen in the teaser to have a crush on Cinderella and to befriend Little Red Riding Hood. He is seen dancing with Cinderella during the ball, but he is later caught as a suspect in the murder.

Fans of Once Upon a Time and Grimm, two successful TV shows that updated classic fairy tales, may enjoy Once Upon a Crime.

Snow White and Red Riding Hood worked together, Peter Pan was Rumplestiltskin’s father, and Rumplestiltskin played the roles of the crocodile for Captain Hook and the beast for Belle in Once Upon a Time. Similarly, in Once Upon a Crime, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood play roles distinct from their respective tales while yet remaining friends.

The trailer for Once Upon a Crime highlights the murder investigation, rather than the intriguing notion of the characters crossing over. The show Grimm was able to combine elements of police drama and fantastical tales. Using familiar fairy tale characters and motifs while remaining firmly rooted as a thriller, Once Upon a Crime achieves a similar result.

The success of Once Upon a Crime could lead to other film adaptations in which Red Riding Hood, like in the novel, investigates crimes from other fairy tales.

It may be in the vein of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot stories or Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films, where the main character, a detective, returns to solve a new case with a new cast of characters. This means that Once Upon a Crime has the potential to launch a new subgenre of murder mysteries on Netflix based on classic fairy tales.

Once Upon a Crime (2023) is an original Netflix film that adds a dash of mystery and intrigue to well-known fairy tales. The film is based on Aito Aoyagi’s novel Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau, which depicts Little Red Riding Hood as a clever detective who solves crimes from many fairy tales.
